General information:

The Plum-headed Parakeet is a type of parrot that occursacross South Asia. He lives in herds, and is considered a very social species.

Physical Description:

This species is about 13 cm long with a tail that can measure almost 9 inches. This parakeet weighs about 66 to 80 g. The male is usually light green plumage with a black chin strap. It has a red head, disappearing into blue-violet on the back of the crown. Its fuselage and tail are bluish-green and there are red / brown spots on theShoulders. The female has a gray-colored head and no patches on his shoulders. Young people can be distinguished by their green heads and shorter tail feathers.

Diet:

The Plum-headed Parakeet feeds on a variety of seeds, nuts, fruits, flowers, leaves and buds.

Habitat:

The Plum-headed Parakeet occurs in woods, forests, plains and arable land. They generally favor terrain with an altitude between 1640 m and 4920 m. The range extends to theIndian subcontinent, including areas in Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Rameswaram Iceland. The Plum-headed Parakeet nests in tree hollows.

Reproduction:

Unlike many other parrots, the Plum-headed Parakeet not mate for life. The female lays an average of 4 to 6 white eggs per clutch. Incubation lasts about 19 to 20 days and the young fledglings are old at about 6 to 7 weeks.
