Rock Music and Its Genres

Rock music comes in a range of forms so the chances are good that everyone on this planet will be able to appreciate at least a few songs. Having said that, rock music is not a style that appeals to everyone. It can be a bit hard and loud for those who prefer their music light and airy. The lyrics can also be on the dark side and depending on the genre, a little depressing. Those who love rock have their particular genres and tend not to stray too much. Those who love soft rock for instance, won't spend much time or money on the punk rock or metal scene. Likewise, metalheads wouldn't be caught dead cruising the pop rock aisle. Alternative rock is a genre that encompasses many others, some of which are included below.

Punk rock is one of those fiercely anti-establishment music genres that your parents hate. It developed between 1974 and 1977, mainly in the US, UK and Australia. Punk rock moved away from mainstream 70s rock by stripping down the instrumentation, playing faster and harder and writing more political or nihilistic lyrics. Writing also confronts sex and relationships in a manner that was scandalous at the time for its anti-sentimentality. It struck a chord with rebellious youths of the time who adopted a particular style of dress and developed their anti-authoritarian philosophies. It was a scornful answer to the political idealism of the time and strongly rejected the flower-power hippie movement. Punk resulted in a total cultural revolution, which gradually led to the development of the alternative rock movement.

Alternative rock serves as an umbrella term for all underground music that has come about since the mid 80s. Its characterised by its rejection of mainstream culture and materialism. Those who feel cast aside by society or who feel like they don't fit in anywhere else often embrace it. It has no set musical style and ranges from grunge to gothic rock. Lyrics are often concerned with social issues like drug use and depression.

Pop punk combines punk rock and pop music and is thus known as a fusion genre. Pop influenced punk has been around since the 70s. It has a faster rhythm than hardcore punk, from which it mainly originated. Their approach is more positive and sarcastic than other punk genres and this is their distinguishing characteristic. Their brattiness also provided many punk fans with relief from the moodiness and nihilistic lyrics of the grunge and hardcore punk bands.

Heavy metal, or simply metal developed in the 60s and early 70s. Vocals vary widely from a multi-octave theatrical approach (Bruce Dickenson from Iron Maiden), to a gruff style (James Hetfield of Metallica), to screaming and growling and a phlegm-clogged, possessed style. Lyrics most commonly revolve around sex, violence, death and the occult. They also feature fantasy inspired themes.

Thrash metal emerged in the early 80s, with a sound that was faster and more aggressive than traditional metal bands. Lyrics dealt with social or political issues or were nihilistic in content.

Death metal came about as thrash evolved into more extreme genres. It is characterised by lyrics that emphasise blasphemy, aggression, violence and Satanism. Vocals tend to include guttural "death grunts", high-pitched screaming and various other hardcore techniques.

Emo is a sub-genre of hardcore punk. It began in the mid 90s and was used to refer to the indie scene. These days the term has expanded to include such a wide variety of bands that very few of them have anything in common. This expansion makes the term very difficult to qualify. It has become so broad, in fact, that many bands and fans of the bands have rejected the "emo" label as it does nothing to distinguish them from hundred of others. It merely lumps them into a single category because they may dress in a similar fashion to other bands, or some of their songs may be popular within the "emo" scene. However, those who identify strongly with the "emo" scene and label are severely offended when the term is applied loosely to so many bands that don't fit the profile. Guy Picciotto of Fugazi and Rites of Spring was once asked how he felt about playing an instrumental role in creating the emo genre. This was his reply, " I don't recognise that attribution. I've never recognised "emo" as a genre of music. I always thought it was the most retarded term ever. ... every band that gets labelled with that term hates it. They feel scandalised by it. But honestly, I just thought that all the bands I played in were punk rock bands. ..."

Some other famous rock stars have their say.

"We weren't too ambitious when we started out. We just wanted to be the biggest thing that ever walked the planet." -- Steven Tyler

"... I don't want you to play me a riff that's going to impress Joe Satriani; give me a riff that makes a kid want to go out and buy a guitar and learn to play- ..." Ozzy Osbourne

"We never thought of ourselves as a 'heavy metal band' we've always regarded ourselves as a rock band. The big difference we've always thought we had a lot more feel for rock, we always went out for songs, not riffs or heavy, heavy sounds. But every now and again it does come on like a sledge hammer." -- Angus Young, guitarist with AC/DC

"Whenever society gets too stifling and the rules get too complex, there's some sort of musical explosion" - Slash/Guns 'n Roses

The Top 10 Ringtones of All Time

Mobile phone ringtones have been around for nearly a decade now, with the first commercial ringtone services said to have emerged in Finland in 1997. Gradually, they have become an established part of modern life, with some of them becoming headline news over the years. So as we look back over the history of ringtones, which stand out as the "big hits" or "classics" of this new kind of music format? Here is an attempt at a top 10 list.

Nokia Tune

The Nokia Tune, based on a 13 note rendering of "Gran Vals" by Francisco Tarrega, a 19th-century Spanish musician, is typically included within all Nokia handsets as the default ringtone and has therefore become famous or infamous due to its popularity. It is the typical ringtone of the middle-aged business man who hasn't got the time or inclination to work out how to change it.

Mosquito Tone

The mosquito tone or "Teen Buzz" is based on adaption of a high-frequency sound designed to repel teenagers from hanging around outside shops, without bothering older people, who could not hear the sound due its pitch. It began being used and sold as a "silent ringtone" for teenagers to use, for example in class, without the teacher being able to hear it.

Crazy Frog

The "Crazy Frog" ringtone was based on an animation called "The Annoying Thing" by Erik Wernquist, and made famous by the mobile content company Jamba who heavily promoted "The Crazy Frog" on TV and the internet. The ringtone spawned a chart hit based on a remix of "Alex F" which went to No.1 in the UK, Japan, Australia and a number of European countries;.

Nokia Morse Code SMS alert

Similar to the Nokia Tune, the Nokia SMS alert is probably the most famous "SMS tone" designed to be used for text message notifications. The tone spells out "S-M-S" in Morse Code.

Classic telephone ring

With the rise of personalised tones a lot of people have decided to avoid them in favour of the classic "bell ringing" sound of a normal telephone. A number of surveys over the years have shown this to be one of the most popular tones.

Sir Mixalot

In 1992, Sir Mixalot, a rapper had a huge hit with "Baby Got Back" which was re-recorded as a ringtone with the lyrics "Pick up the phone! Pick up the phone! 'Cause you don't wanna miss this call and I cannot lie!." This was one of the first "ringtone remixes" of popular songs to achieve success after being marketed by Jamba, the same company that produced the Crazy Frog ringtone.

R2D2 Ringtone

Ringtones based on the sounds "R2D2" from the film Star Wars makes in the film are emerging as a popular choice for ringtones. R2D2 sounds make a great choice for a ringtone as they are loud, easily heard and distinctive but just about manage to avoid a tack, novelty feel like some ringtones.

Nokia Dying Remix

Based on the classic Nokia Tune, the Nokia "Dying" or "Flat Battery" remix is a humorous version of the classic Nokia Tune where the sound eventually goes flat or explodes, giving a nod to the annoyance that it can cause when heard repeatedly.

CTU Ringtone

The popular TV show "24" features a highly recognisable ringtone on the phones in the CTU office complex. The same sound is now being marketed as a ringtone for mobile phones and is rapidly becoming a big hit.

iphone ringtone

When Steve Jobs announced the launch of the iphone in early 2007, his demonstration included a ringtone, which was quickly made available as a recording by a number of websites. The ringtone has been described as like "holy angels tinkling" and was eventually included within the standard ringtone set on the iphone.

Reggae Music's Royal Empress - Queen Ifrica

"My music is music of upliftment. It is music that teaches. It shows you how not to complain, but to seek solutions for yourself." ~ Queen Ifrica

Conscious, roots reggae music has always been a male-dominated genre, so it can be difficult for female artists to break through into the top. But this "Fyah Muma" (Fire Mother), the royal Rastafarian empress known as Queen Ifrica, is definitely setting a blistering pace to becoming the foremost female in this arena. Hallelujah - we've been waiting for her for too long!

Born Ventrice Latora Morgan in Spanish Town, Jamaica, on March 25, 1975, this daughter of Ska king, Derrick Morgan, was raised in rural Jamaica. She was nicknamed Ifrica by her mother who thought her face was shaped like a map of Africa. Queen Ifrica burst onto the reggae scene in 1995 when she performed in, and won by a landslide, a Montego Bay talent contest. In 1998, Tony Rebel recognized her gifts and her quality and invited her to join his Flames Production family. Now, Queen Ifrica is using her substantial hereditary talents to help restore the cultural vibes to reggae music and to Jamaica as a whole.

Her commanding stage presence, strong self-confidence, and her delightful voice and dynamic performances have created a demand for her on the international reggae scene as well. She has toured extensively and been warmly received throughout the U.S. and Europe, appearing at festivals such as Summer Jam (Germany, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008), Reggae on the River (California, 2006), One Love Festival Tour (US, 2006), Sierra Nevada World Music Festival (California, 2007), Reggae Sundance Festival (Holland, 2007, 2008), Ragga Muffins Festival (California, 2007, 2008), Rototom Sunsplash (Italy, 2007, 2008), Montreal International Reggae Festival (Montreal, 2007), Uppsala Reggae Festival (Sweden, 2008), Anthems of Love (Trinidad, 2008) and the Millennium Countdown (Bahamas, 2008). She has shared the stage with the legendary Abyssinians, Black Uhuru, Gregory Isaacs, Buju Banton, Culture, Sly & Robbie, Burning Spear and a host of others. This mother of two also mesmerized a hometown audience in Montego Bay, Jamaica, with her fiery performance at the 2008 Reggae Sumfest. Visiting nearly every continent, she would like to perform in Africa in the upcoming year.

Stirring up controversy and social awareness by addressing topics like incest and child molestation, Queen Ifrica claims to find inspiration for her music in the people she meets while doing community outreach work. She believes she was put here for a special purpose - to do her part for all the suffering people in the world. Her songs are uplifting, teaching us to appreciate life and to look for solutions wherever there are problems. Some of her role models in the industry were Sister Carol, Rita Marley and Marcia Griffiths.

Sometimes drawing on her own personal experiences, this mother of two has covered religious discrimination in Natty Fi Grow, Jamaica's violence and negativity in Randy, a poignant rage against gangster violence in Boxers and Stockings, the pain of lost love in Goodbye Love, downtrodden communities living in poverty in Zinc Fence, domestic violence in Below the Waist, incest and child molestation in Daddy Don't Touch Me There, and the dangers of Jamaica's latest skin bleaching trend in Mi Nah Rub. This Rasta Empress doesn't shy away from social commentaries. She proves you can sing about anything; it just has to be done with class.

Bold and vibrant, sweet and sultry, Queen Ifrica's voice and delivery have improved over the years. She fills arenas with beauty and positive vibes while sharing with us her brand of socially uplifting culture music. She exemplifies what consciousness combined with talent can achieve and proves herself to be a fine example for all women.

We hope to see a follow-up studio album from the Fyah Muma in 2009. May her wisdom and morals and truth stay with her and her meteoric rise continue!

Reading Music Notes

Reading music notes look complicated and many people especially kids loose their interest thinking that it is too difficult. On the contrary, at least the basics of reading music can be grasped quite easily with a certain amount of perseverance. Of course it needs a little effort at the inception but once you get used to reading the scores, reading music notes would be as easy as reading any nursery rhymes.

What is a Clef?

A clef is a musical symbol that is placed at the beginning of the staff. It determines the letter names of the lines and spaces. Treble clef and the bass clef are the two main clefs. In most contemporary sheet music you will see the music will be written on either the treble clef staff or the bass clef. The treble clef consists of notes that are higher in pitch than the bass clef. A staff is made up of five horizontal lines and four spaces. The pitches are named after the first seven letters of the English alphabet (A B C D E F G).

How to play different notes:

One should be able to differentiate between the duration of the notes. This is where the importance of the values of notes comes in. Each note may have a specific length on its own. And each kind of note has a different symbol assigned to it. It is important to know the tempo otherwise a small mistake in a count may mess up the whole piece. The different kinds of notes are the whole note, the half note, the quarter note, the eighth note and the sixteenth note.

To play a whole note in the time signature of 4/4 it would have to be played and held for the duration of 4 beats. Half notes in 4/4 time would be held for half of the bar or two of the 4 beats of the bar. Each half note would be played for the duration of half of the bar. Quarter notes in 4/4 time would be held for 1/4 of the length of a bar. The proper way to count quarter notes in 4/4 time is 1 for the 1st quarter note, 2 for the 2nd, 3 for the 3rd and 4 for the 4th. Eighth notes are half the length of quarter notes and the sixteenth notes are half the length of the eighth notes.

The meter is given at the beginning of the staff after the clef. The meter or time signature in a musical piece is indicated by a fraction. The lower number of the fraction tells what kind of note receives one beat. The upper number tells how many beats are in a measure. The majority of the contemporary rock and pop music is written in the 4/4 time signature.

Learning music is fun and can be quite relaxing also. With a little perseverance you can learn any instrument you want. Don't be intimidated by the symbols of the different notes. Once you learn the basics it won't take you much time to get to that point when you would be able to play any song by just looking at the notes. So enjoy your journey in music land!

Rock Music Code

Music code is the stuff that computer software writers write. It is all the letters, numbers, symbols, and so on that ultimately add up to calculations and finally becoming images and sounds on the computer. HTML is one type of code. HTML is the basic code for most websites. The content of the HTML code of a website determines what will be shown and where, what will move and how, and what will make noise and when.

Rock music code, therefore, is an HTML code that can be pasted into the existing HTML code that makes up the website. The code will direct the website to play pre-determined rock music when the user accesses the website. Rock music code is available for any type of website. It can also be used for the free template websites such as Blogger, Livejournal, Friendster, and so on. Anything that accepts HTML can allow for rock music code.

First, choose what song you would like. Would you like some Aerosmith? How about some Elvis Presley? Or how about something more modern, like 311, Madonna, Nine Inch Nails, or Rasputina? These codes are available. You can find them online for free or by paying for them a reasonable amount of money. Private individuals often offer these rock music codes to the general public, although copyright infringement can come into play if you're not careful about what you put up on your website or blog.

Whatever rock music code you choose, you can always change it later. So in the meantime, rock and roll, baby.

Music Distribution Deals - Facts You Should Know Before Signing

With the escalating progression of music technology in the last decade, mainland CD stores are continuing to decline in popularity, as the trendy demand for digital music downloads continues to crush them further into the archives of history. Claiming more than half of the globes music buying audience, Digital Music Distribution is the predominant method of music marketing the world offers us today.

More and more musicians are appearing on the scene with highly polished albums, mostly produced entirely under their own steam. They have become resourceful singular empires, holding sole rights and authenticity as unconstrained producers and marketing agents of their own products. These musicians are ready to take the world by storm by hooking themselves up with one of the many distribution companies currently available.

But as an independent musician, what are you really signing up to in a distribution deal?

Many digital distributors offer musicians the chance to have their music available on many of the popular and esteemed music selling outfits; Apple iTunes being one of the most popular playgrounds for current music consumers. But whilst they might promise to get your music on the right path, how is it going to be found amongst the billion other artists competing for sales? Consider that most main stream artists have many more dollars poured into their advertising and marketing persona's than the unsigned musician could ever afford. Major acts are funded by major pockets ensuring the best chance of sales.

One answer to this is that many unsigned musicians feel that by simply having their music made available alongside mainstream artists is a boost to their credibility, affording them and their music a much higher distinction. It is certain that a good deal can grant your music a triumphant victory if you manage to populate vintage music selling sites. Your only subsequent aim is to actually make sales on them. Otherwise what is the purpose after all?

Deals, terms and conditions vary from business to business, so it is worth looking around and researching which type of distribution method is right for you. There are many worthy deals, and probably just as many scams, circulating the information highway.

If you are thinking of accepting a distribution deal, before signing the dotted line it is important to ask questions such as:

o Does the deal include any publicity or promotional advantages to the artist?

o Are there any payments I must make, statutory, collective or otherwise?

o What percentage of royalties will I receive, and how are payments handled?

o Can I be provided with an estimation of how profitable your distributive methods are?

o What are my rights in terminating the contract?

o Am I solely responsible for tax declarations on my net income?

Other things you must check before signing are the 'exclusivity' terms. These could greatly inhibit your freedom. Does a deal involve licensing your music digitally (via preferred online formats) or does the deal also include physical sales? Some are highly exclusive in nature whilst others give you rights to proceed with marketing your music via other channels.

Bear in mind that many reputable and authorised distributors, such as CDBaby for one, will not allow an artist to exploit other distribution channels, as the two parties run the risk of putting your music on the exact same sites. A hassle major retailers and distributors can do without, and an understandable clause too.

You must read the terms of an agreement in full. It is absolutely essential that you fully understand what is expected from you as well as what is being offered!

Here is a cautionary example:

A music distribution site currently offers a deal for both digital and physical music sales, (the terms of agreement are publicly available for download on the site).

The site appears to charge $99.99 as a one off payment. Upon checking their terms of agreement however, it states:

"After one year of promotion, we may archive, remove and/or suspend your Works from the Service without terminating this Agreement."

What then if the agreement is still in place but your work is no longer made available on their site?

"You may pay an annual fee, which is to be determined, to insure that your Materials are not archived, but displayed and offered for sale after the first year of Service."

So if you refuse to pay this annual fee, the site still holds all rights to license and sell your music as expressed in the agreement you already signed!

This is not necessarily wrong but is it what you want? Always check the small print and read any agreement thoroughly. As a general rule be wary of sites that ask you to pay for distributing your music. On the basis that a site's marketing strategies were fruitful, and they believed that your music is good enough to reap a profit, why would they be asking you to pay them in advance? Suffice to say that not all sites that request payment from an artist deliver an unsatisfactory service. Speak to other artists whose music is being distributed and see how the deal is working for them. If something doesn't sound quite right in any deal, double check with the distributor. If you still receive an insufficient response, you can always seek a legal opinion. But if you are really in doubt, perhaps you're better off without!

If you are marketing your music through a label they should be sufficiently taking care of your interests. A reputable label with ensure that all terms in a distribution setting are clear and fair to all parties involved. Being part of an honest label is often a good way to relieve yourself from some of the finer pressures attached to direct schemes. They will of course also expect a cut of the profits but will often have a good degree of interest in maintaining their own artists' affairs in an appropriate manner. If the artist is happy the label thrives upon its good reputation, and its integrity towards its artists.

Despite the odds, sales margins have increased for thousands of unsigned musicians, simply because of the greater variety of marketing mediums available. You can not only market your music yourself, but allow others to do it for you. The more places your music is available the higher your chances are of achieving sales. But as with any enterprise, money and profit is the primary goal, and therefore you should proceed with caution before handing your personal work over to anyone.

There are many reputable distributors, who promise to do the job and actually deliver what they stated. But, as with everything in life, there are those that you would rather not be involved with. So research as many as possible, and ask as many questions as you see fit. After all, a year is a long time to get stuck in a deal you later realised doesn't quite work for you! Not only would a bad deal cause you much frustration in its limitations, but could also undermine your confidence in participating in future marketing opportunities.

Stimulate Your Brain with Classical Music

I'll always remember my dad saying that he loved listening to birdsong early in the morning. The singing centered him in a way that I didn't understand at the time.

Now I know why he felt so refreshed.

Birdsong is a high frequency sound - around 5,000 hertz. Any sound between 5,000 and 8,000 hertz has been found to recharge our brain's batteries.

You know what else is amazing?

5,000 hertz is also the frequency that energizes plants. In fact plants showed a 700 percent increase in efficiency of absorbing nutrients when exposed to high frequency classical music. This frequency actually helps the little pores on the plant's leaves called stomata to open up.

And who says nature doesn't have a plan. That's why you'll find that in areas that don't have a lot of birds singing, there's not a lot of plant growth either.

Lots of birds equals lots of plants. Few birdsongs means not a whole lot of greenery. Now I know why we moved from Los Angeles to Asheville, North Carolina - we wanted birds and trees in our life.

Have you ever entered a room that has a weird or uncomfortable feeling about it? You might just be getting uncomfortable because of low frequency sound waves.

The lowest of those are called infrasound. They're produced by machines such as vehicles, household equipment and heating and cooling systems. It's been known for some time that these low frequency waves can cause symptoms such as nausea, headaches, fatigue, insomnia, vibration of internal organs and a feeling of oppression.

On the other hand, certain high frequency sounds literally energize your mind. Scientists have found that sounds from 5,000 to 8,000 hertz recharge your brain's batteries.

If your CD collection includes music by Mozart, Baroque Music or even Tibetan Chants, keep listening. In numerous studies, these sounds have been found to charge the cortex of the brain and stimulate health and wellness.

At 120-125 hertz you begin to hear the kick drums and bass guitar common to rock music. These lower frequencies produce the opposite effect - they drain us.

Why is this?

Because they have wave-lengths longer than we are tall, which is why lower frequencies are FELT as well as heard. You can feel this low frequency full-body sensation at dance clubs and rock concerts. Or from listening to most FM radio stations.

Since we are mostly exposed to low frequency sounds in the media, I strongly suggest you balance your brain and body by listening to high frequency classical music at least once a day. It's easy and effortless - and great for you.

Here's to your sound health.

OPM Stands For Original Filipino Music

Traditional Filipino Music is generally a confluence of Western styles and our own ethnic music. In modern times, however, Filipino music is similar to modern music that is heard in any part of the world.

Original musical works by Filipino artists is usually referred to as "Original Pilipino Music" or OPM. Many song and music artists of the Philippines usually use Tagalog and English for the lyrics of their songs. Thus, if you listen to any local FM radio station, it would not be a surprise to hear OPM songs with English lyrics and titles.

One of the best contemporary artists that have made a lot of Filipino music is Mr. Ryan Cayabyab. Ryan is a professor of the University of the Philippines conservatory if music and is currently the head and conductor of the San Miguel Philharmonic orchestra.

Ryan has been an internationally acclaimed musical artist and has received numerous awards on the International level. His most popular composition is "Kay ganda ng ating musika" which literally means "How beautiful is our music", which he composed during the first Metropop song festival in the early 80s. The Metropop song festival was then the most prestigious avenue for original competitions. Ryan still continuous to produce albums with his Orchestra. He also arranges for many singers and song writers.

If you want to hear ethnic Filipino music, you just have to hear the music of Joey Ayala. Joey Ayala makes use of indigenous instruments for his music. One characteristic of Joey Ayala's music is that you hear the sound of nature as accompaniment for his songs, like a stream that is flowing or birds chirping. Nowadays however, Joey Ayala's songs are not played on FM radio. Simply go to any CD music store on any mall if you want to grab an album of Joey Ayala.

Like in any part of the world, FM stations usually play pop music so it is unlikely that you hear ethnic music when you tune in to FM stations. If you are more of the rocker type of musician or listener, all you have to do is tune in to the "Alternative music" FM stations. The most popular of these FM rock stations is the Manila-based FM station NU 107.1.

In the Philippine, the world "Alternative music" refers to the heavy metal, or rock music done by Filipino artists. This type of wave in Filipino music started during the early 90's.

Some of most popular alternative music bands are "Eraserheads", "Parokya ni Edgar" and "Wolfgang". Other popular alternative bands are "MYMP", "Hale", and "Orange and Lemons". Popular female alternative song artists are Kitchie Nadal and Barbie Almadi. These two ladies have very good voices that sound like Alanis Morisette (if you still remember this artist from the mid 90's).

Birthday Song Best

The most popular song in the English language undoubtedly was sung to you on your first birthday - and probably thereafter by you to many family members and friends dozens of times a year.

Grown men and women in service clubs sing it to each other every week with gusto.

It was the first song to be sung in outer space - by Apollo IX astronauts on March 8, 1969.

Only the songs "Auld Lang Syne" and "For He's A Jolly Good Fellow" are almost as often sung.

By now, you have guessed that the famous ditty is "Happy Birthday To You."

Forerunner of the little song was composed in 1893 by two sisters. Dr. Patty Hill was principal of the Louisville, Kentucky, Experimental Kindergarten. Mildred Hill was a teacher there.

In those days, children began school in the first grade at age 6. There they began the journey through the "three Rs" -- readin', 'riting and 'rithmatic.

The Hill teachers were the vanguard of a theory that children were creative and responsive to learning at a much earlier age than 6. They awakened young minds with structured games, rhyme recitations, coloring, music, dancing and singing.

Patty devised the curricula. Mildred drew on her musical talent as organist for her Old Kentucky Church to provide music for singing and dancing.

One day, Patty wrote a few lyrics for a school song to open the day for their pupils and prepare their minds to concentrate on the coming lessons. She titled it "Good Morning To All." Mildred put the words to music - perhaps inspired by a spiritual refrain.

The greeting was included in a collection titled "Song Stories of the Kindergarten" published in 1893. The book sold modestly but well enough to justify reprinting.

In the first revision, the Good Morning words "to all" became "to you" -- on the premise, I suppose, that teachers had no assigned place or shining face.

"Song Stories" sales increased as the kindergarten idea caught on. The Good Morning song was standard for beginning pupils throughout the country. As a kindergartener in 1926 (yes, I'm that old). I and my classmates sang it every school day - after a cheerful "Good morning, children" from teach.

Schoolroom singing to the teacher has gone out of style. However, I remembered "Good Morning To You" all my life - singing it to my children at breakfast -- and to my grandchildren when they stay overnight with us. They love it:

Good morning to you.

Good morning to you.

We're all in our places,

With bright shining faces.

Oh, what a way

To start a new day.

Mildred died in 1916. Patti became professor of kindergarten education at Columbia University. Their ground-breaking book of kindergarten practices was nearly forgotten.

* * *

Thirty-one years after the first publication of "Song Stories," a man named Robert H. Coleman added a happy-birthday-to-you verse to the good-morning-to-you verse and original music notes. Then, without asking permission of Patti Hill, he published the combination as own -- in sheet-music form.

The birthday verse was so popular, subsequent printings were for it -- and the accompanying musical bars -- only.

Dr. Hill sued Coleman and proved that she owned the melody. She and another sister were awarded substantial damages. A new copyright was issued the following year (1935) and acquired by Birch Tree Group, Ltd.

The copyright was renewed in 1963 and sold along with other assets to Warner Communications in 1988 - for $28 million.

The "Birthday Song" brought in $2 million in its 1996 public accounting report published by Forbes Magazine. Rock singer Michael Jackson recently bought the copyright for $2 million which now is earning "at least" $1 million annually.

Every time "Happy Birthday To You" is sung or played commercially, the Moonwalker gets a cut - until 2010 when the verse copyright renewal expires.

The melody copyright of the Hill sisters passed into public domain long ago. Therefore, anyone has the right freely to write and sing their new words to the old tune.

The song is sung so widely, and often, copyright owners and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers long ago gave up trying to collect royalties from families and service clubs.

Sing away Rotary, Kiwanis and Lions.

* * *

No need to worry at all about performing the other two "most popular" songs.

"Auld Lang Syne" originally was a poem written in 1788 by Scottish poet Robert Burns. It is not known when folks began reciting the poem with accompaniment of an old Highland air known as "The Miller's Wedding."

The words and music were first published together in 1796. Very quickly, "The Good Old Days" became a universal good-night song among British and American sentimentalists.

It is rendered most properly among a circle of friends with their arms over their chests and holding hands with adjacent partners.

"For He's (She's) A Jolly Good Fellow" is another party song popularized by the French originally but adopted and immortalized by the British. Keep in mind that "fellow" is an ancient English word for "companion" or "partners in a joint undertaking" and is not gender conscious.

Etude Magazine says the music construction is medieval French in the time of King Louis XIV. French soldiers used "jolly" as an insult for the English general Marlborough.

As is often the case, an enemy's curse can be turned by the insulted into a term of approval -- "Yankee Doodle Dandy" for example.

Marlborough's soldiers took "jolly good fellow" back home after the war, and there it became a popular tune in the pubs.

About 1830, somebody added a second verse: "We won't go home 'till morning, 'til daylight doest appear." The song, therefore, is properly sung as two verses.

We can speculate about how long it will take for "Roll Out The Barrel" also to take its place closely behind "Happy Birthday To You."

If I know Americans, it won't be long.

Rhythm and Blues

Rhythm and blues (or R&B) was coined as a musical marketing term in the United States in 1949 by Jerry Wexler at Billboard magazine, and was used to designate upbeat popular music performed by African American artists that combined jazz, gospel, and blues. It replaced the term race music, which was deemed offensive, as well as the Billboard category name "Harlem Hit Parade," in June of 1949, and was initially used to identify the rocking style of music that combined the 12 bar blues format and boogie woogie with a backbeat, later known as rock and roll. In 1948, RCA Victor was marketing black music under the name "Blues and Rhythm," but the words were reversed by Wexler of Atlantic Records, the most aggressive and most dominant label in the R&B field in the early years. By the 1970s, rhythm and blues was being used as a blanket term to describe soul and funk as well. Today, the acronym "R&B" is almost always used instead of "rhythm and blues", and defines the modern version of the soul and funk influenced African-American pop music that originated with the demise of disco in 1980.

Original rhythm and blues
In its first manifestation, rhythm and blues was a predecessor to rock and roll. It was strongly influenced by jazz and jump music as well as black gospel music, and influenced jazz in return (hard bop was the product of the influence of rhythm and blues, blues, and gospel music on bebop) and African tribal beats.

The first rock and roll consisted of rhythm and blues songs like "Rocket 88" and "Shake, Rattle and Roll" making an appearance on the popular music charts as well as the R&B charts. "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On", the first hit by Jerry Lee Lewis was an R&B cover song that made #1 on pop, R&B and country and western charts.

Musicians paid little attention to the distinction between jazz and rhythm and blues, and frequently recorded in both genres. Numerous swing bands (for example, Jay McShann's, Tiny Bradshaw's, and Johnny Otis's) also recorded rhythm and blues. Count Basie had a weekly live rhythm and blues broadcast from Harlem. Even a bebop icon like arranger Tadd Dameron also arranged for Bull Moose Jackson and spent two years as Jackson's pianist after establishing himself in bebop. Most of the studio musicians in R&B were jazz musicians. And it worked in the other direction as well. Many of the musicians on Charlie Mingus's breakthrough jazz recordings were R&B veterans. Lionel Hampton's big band of the early 1940s, which produced the classic recording "Flying Home" (tenor sax solo by Illinois Jacquet) was the breeding ground for many of the bebop legends of the 1950s. Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson was a one-man fusion, a bebop saxophonist and a blues shouter.

The 1950s was the premier decade for classic rhythm and blues. Overlapping with other genres such as jazz and rock and roll, R&B also developed regional variations. A strong, distinct style straddling the border with blues came out of New Orleans and was based on a rolling piano style first made famous by Professor Longhair. In the late 1950s, Fats Domino hit the national charts with "Blueberry Hill" and "Ain't That a Shame". Other artists who popularized this Louisiana flavor of R&B included Clarence "Frogman" Henry, Frankie Ford, Irma Thomas, The Neville Brothers, and Dr. John.

At the start of their career, The Rolling Stones were essentially an R&B band.

Contemporary R&B

It was not until the 1980s that the term "R&B" regained ordinary usage. During that time, the soul music of James Brown and Sly & the Family Stone had adapted elements from psychedelic music and other styles through the work of performers like George Clinton. Funk also became a major part of disco, a kind of dance pop electronic music. By the early 1980s, however, funk and soul had become sultry and sexually-charged with the work of Prince and others. At that time, the modern style of contemporary R&B came to be a major part of American popular music.

R&B today defines a style of African-American music, originating after the demise of disco in 1980, that combines elements of soul music, funk music, pop music, and (after 1986) hip hop in the form known as contemporary R&B. In this context only the abbreviation "R&B" is used, not the full expression.

Sometimes referred to as "urban contemporary" (the name of the radio format that plays hip hop and R&B music) or "urban pop", contemporary R&B is distinguished by a slick, electronic record production style, drum machine-backed rhythms, and a smooth, lush style of vocal arrangement. Uses of hip hop inspired beats are typical, although the roughness and grit inherent in hip hop are usually reduced and smoothed out.

History

Contemporary R&B singer Mary J. Blige performs on the National Mall during the "NFL Kickoff Live 2003" Concert. With the transition from soul to R&B in the early to mid 1980s, solo singer Luther Vandross and new stars like Prince (Purple Rain) and Michael Jackson (Off the Wall, Thriller) took over, and dominated the primary schools throughout the 1980s. Jackson's Thriller, which repopularized black music with pop audiences after a post-disco backlash among United States mainstream audiences, is the best-selling album of all time worldwide.

Female R&B singers like Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson gained great popularity during the last half of the decade; and Tina Turner, then in her 50s, came back with a series of hits with crossover appeal. Also popular was New Edition, a group of teenagers who served as the prototype for later boy bands such as the New Kids on the Block, The Backstreet Boys, and others.

In 1986, Teddy Riley began producing R&B recordings that included influences from the increasingly popular genre of hip hop music. This combination of R&B style and hip-hop rhythms was termed new jack swing, and artists such as Keith Sweat, Guy, Jodeci, and BellBivDeVoe (featuring former members of New Edition). Another popular, but short-lived group, with more pronounced R&B roots was Levert, whose lead singer, Gerald Levert, was the son of O'Jays lead vocalist Eddie Levert.

In the early 1990s, R&B group Boyz II Men repopularized classic-soul inspired vocal harmony, and several similar groups (among them Shai, Soul for Real, and Dru Hill) would follow in their footsteps. Boyz II Men, and several of their competitors, benefited from lush ballads from producers such as Babyface and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who brought Michael Jackson's sister Janet Jackson to fame during the late 1980s and early 1990s. As a solo artist, Babyface and contemporaries such as Brian McKnight eschewed prominent hip hop influences, and recorded in a smooth, soft style of R&B termed quiet storm.

In the early 1990s, alternative rock, adult contemporary, and gangsta rap ruled the charts, and R&B artists began adding even more of a rap/hip hop sound to their work. New jack swing had its synthesizer-heavy rhythm tracks replaced by grittier East Coast hip hop inspired backing tracks, resulting in a genre labeled "hip hop soul" by Sean "Puffy" Combs, producer for Mary J. Blige. Blige and other hip hop soul artists such as R. Kelly, Montell Jordan, Brandy, and Aaliyah, more than their slicker new jack swing predecessors, brought hip hop slang, style, and attitudes to R&B music. The subgenre also includes a heavy gospel influence with vocal inflections and sounds. The style became less popular by the end of the 1990s, but later experienced a resurgence. The hip hop soul sound continues to be heard in the work of artists such as Jaheim, Ashanti, Amerie, and Keyshia Cole.

During the mid-1990s, highly successful artists such as Mariah Carey, girl group TLC and the aforementioned Boyz II Men brought contemporary R&B to the mainstream. Boyz II Men and Mariah Carey recorded several Billboard Hot 100 number-one hits, including "One Sweet Day", a collaboration between both acts which became the longest-running number-one hit in Hot 100 history. In addition, both Boyz II Men and TLC released albums in 1994, II and CrazySexyCool, respectively, that sold over ten million copies, earning them diamond certification from the Recording Industry Association of America. Other top-selling R&B artists from this era included singer Toni Braxton, singer/songwriter/producer R. Kelly, and girl group En Vogue.

During the later part of the decade, neo soul, which added a 1970s soul music influence to the hip hop soul blend, arose, led by artists such as D'Angelo, Lauryn Hill, and Maxwell. Several artists, most notably Missy Elliott, further blurred the line between R&B and hip hop by recording in both genres simultaneously.

During the late-1990s and early 2000s, the influence of pop on R&B could be heard in the work of several pop musicians, most notably Jennifer Lopez and the later recordings of *NSYNC and the early recordings of 98 Degrees. *NSYNC's lead singer Justin Timberlake went on to make several solo recordings that showed heavy influences from both R&B and hip hop music. Other pop stars who perform heavily R&B influenced pop music (sometimes referred to as "dirty pop","urban pop", or a modern definition of "hip pop") include Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani, and Pink.

In the United Kingdom, R&B found its way into the UK garage subgenre of 2Step, typified by R&B-style singing accompanied by breakbeat/jungle rhythms. Among the most notable 2Step artists is Craig David, who crossed over to American R&B audiences in the early 2000s.

Present day
By the 2000s, the cross-pollination between R&B and hip hop had increased to the point where, in most cases, the only prominent difference between a record being a hip hop record or an R&B record is whether its vocals are rapped or sung. Mainstream modern R&B has a sound more based on rhythm than hip hop soul had, and lacks the hardcore and soulful urban "grinding" feel on which hip-hop soul relied. That rhythmic element descends from new jack swing. R&B began to focus more on solo artists rather than groups as the 2000s progressed. As of 2005, the most prominent R&B artists include Usher, Beyoncé (formerly of Destiny's Child), and Mariah Carey whose music often blurs the line between contemporary R&B and pop.

Soulful R&B continues to be popular, with artists such as Alicia Keys,John Legend, Toni Braxton and American Idol winner Fantasia showcasing classic influences in their work. Some R&B singers have used elements of Caribbean music in their work, especially dancehall and reggaeton.

Quiet storm, while still existent, is no longer a dominant presence on the pop charts, and is generally confined to urban adult contemporary radio. Most of the prominent quiet storm artists, including Babyface and Gerald Levert, began their careers in the 1980s and 1990s, although newer artists such as Kem also record in the quiet storm style. Its influence can still be seen in singles such as Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together".

In addition, several producers have developed specialized styles of song production. Timbaland, for example, became notable for his hip hop and jungle based syncopated productions in the late-1990s, during which time he produced R&B hits for Aaliyah, Ginuwine, and singer/rapper Missy Elliott. By the end of the decade, Timbaland's influences had shifted R&B songs towards a sound that approximated his own, with slightly less of a hip hop feel. Lil' Jon became famous for a style he termed "crunk & B", deriving its influences from the Southern hip hop subclassification of crunk music. Jon gave his main R&B artist, Ciara, the title of "The First Lady of Crunk & B", and Brooke Valentine and Usher have also recorded R&B songs with strong crunk influences.

Contemporary R&B subgenres
These are the major subgenres of contemporary R&B, roughly in chronological order of popularity.

Quiet storm

Quiet storm is a broad category of R&B and jazz-based music that is mellow, laid-back and often romantic. Its name comes from an innovative radio show that originated at WHUR at Howard University in the mid-1970s, named after Smokey Robinson's hit 1975 single "Quiet Storm". Unlike contemporary R&B, quiet storm shows little influence from hip hop, and generally plays to the urban adult contemporary crowd. The genre achieved great mainstream success during the 1980s with artists like Luther Vandross, Anita Baker, and Sade. Among other notable quiet storm musicians are Lionel Richie, Gerald Levert, Joe, and Brian McKnight.

New jack swing
A fusion of hip hop music and R&B, new jack swing was distinguished by significant use of rapped choruses or bridges and prominent use of drum machines such as the Roland TR-808. Teddy Riley and his group Guy are credited with being the inventor of the genre; other notable figures include Bobby Brown, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Jodeci, and Boyz II Men. A female alternative, new jill swing, was championed by acts such as Janet Jackson, Total, Shanice, TLC, and SWV.

Hip hop soul
Essentially new jack swing for the 1990s, hip hop soul took the style further towards a pure hip hop sound, usually accompanied by a nervy, gangsta rap-esque image. The sound was remenescent of funk with the inclusion of relatively darker baselines with elongated groove notes. Among its most notable figures were Montell Jordan, BLACKstreet, Groove Theory, and the "Queen of Hip Hop Soul", Mary J. Blige.

Neo soul
Neo soul blends a hip hop influenced R&B sound with the classic soul of the 1970s. True neo soul is characterized by an earthy feel, accented by soul-styled harmonies, and accompanied by alternative hip hop beats. It generally has a much less mainstream sound than general R&B music. Some artists of this genre include Van Hunt, Tony! Toni! Toné!, Angie Stone, Maxwell, D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, John Legend, Alicia Keys, and Jill Scott.

Music Of France

French music has greatly contributed and played an important role in the development of the European music and cinema. As French people are very fond of music and food, music is all the more popular in the country. Though a lot of music is influenced and brought in by British and American bands, French too have their own original music and genre.

The French have also bestowed a lot to the world of modern western music, jazz, rock and pop. In fact, modern western pop music has influenced music in France in a significant way, and this has resulted in the country seeing the rise of popular French rock, hip-hop, and pop performers.

After the introduction of operas in Italy, they were blended with French ballets and French operas also came up. The masters of French opera during the Baroque period were Jean-Baptiste Lully and his successor Jean-Philippe Rameau.

Spectral music, a form of computer assisted composition, developed by the French has become quite popular in Europe and the United States. French music is a blend of a variety of different music styles. Many great legendary composers have originated from French, and French music has greatly dominated European music and art. Immigrants from Africa, Latin America and Asia have significantly influenced French music. French hip hop, rock and pop performers are extremely popular in the country. Traditional or folk music basically survived in remote areas or nationalistic regions like Island of Corsica and Bretons. And, folk dances were seen more in the West of France in places like Courante.

There are deep differences between the regions of central France, with the Auvergne and Limousin retaining the most vibrant folk traditions of the area. The Bagpipe is found in wide forms in France compared to any other country. An unrelated unique ethnic group, called the Basques, has a form of folk music which is called Trikitixa. Spiritual or secular and even modern groups of 3 males are called music of Corsica and this music is considered to be extremely harmonious. City of Lorient hosts France's most popular music festival. The most popular form of Breton folk is the bagad pipe band, which features native instruments like biniou and bombarde alongside drums and, in more modern groups, biniou braz pipes.

During the Renaissance, Burgundy became a major center for musical development. There was even a romantic era which gave birth to many music pioneers. At the end of World War II, French musicians experimented a lot with music and this creativity led to development of many different genres of music in France.

Rapper 50 Cent

50 Cent, of his real name Curtis Jackson, is an American rapper born in the Queens of New York, July 6 1978.

The origin of his pseudonym, 50 Cent, comes from a New York gangster. When rapper 50 Cent was 8 years old, his mother dies, his father abandons him and rapper 50 Cent begins to sell cocaine to survive, while rapper 50 Cent was brought up by his grand mother. Despite this difficult childhood, rapper 50 Cent hopes to one day have the money and the glory that he has always dream as a rapper.

After a few forth and back in jail, it is 1996 that rapper 50 Cent meets Jam Master Jay of group Run DMC which label is JMJ Records. But the association with Jam Master Jay didn't last, what is more rapper 50 Cent agreed with another label Trackmasters, already known in New York as a powerful label and having already worked with artists such as NAS or Jay-Z. Label Trackmasters signs rapper 50 Cent, who prepares his first album Power Of The $, with Columbia Records in 1999.

There are some rapper 50 Cent singles with success such as: « Your Life's on the Line » and « How to Rob». Because of this last single, rapper 50 Cent was almost dead in front of the house of his grand parents in Mai 2000, people shot at him 9 times, and 3 bullets hit him, one in his hand, one in his back and the last one in his face, without physical damages but would have given rapper 50 Cent his style of voice. rapper 50 Cent still keeps sequels of this attack. However, a number of rappers hardly believe him.

Columbia Records, who was about to release rapper 50 Cent album, gives up. The two following years, rapper 50 Cent sets up his own group G-Unit with Tony Yayo as well as Lloyd Banks, two artists with whom rapper 50 Cent will perform in freestyle and mixtapes and afterwards, when Tony Yayo goes in jail, Young Buck joins the group.

In 2002, rapper 50 Cent meets Eminem, who, after listening to some mixtapes of the artist, immediately signs him at Shady/Aftermath (Label of Eminem and Dr. Dre). His first success is the single "Wanksta" which was on the original soundtrack of film 8 Mile.

In 2003, rapper 50 Cent releases his first LP with label Shady/Aftermath, with songs such as "P.I.M.P", "In Da Club" or "21 Questions". The success is instant: 800 000 sales the first week. It is also the biggest success of 2003 with nearly 12 million copies sold. The same year, rapper 50 Cent releases his first LP with his group G-Unit, the album Beg For Mercy. Once again the success is there. In 2005, rapper 50 Cent follows with his second LP with Shady/Aftermath, The Massacre, 1,14 million albums are sold in 4 days. It is the sixth best performance of sales ever. Rapper 50 Cent also establishes another record (like the Beatles) with 4 singles in the top 10 sales. The rapper 50 Cent albums are sold at more than 8 million copies.

Rapper 50 Cent then creates his own clothing line named like his group: G-Unit Clothing, signs contracts with Reebok and other brands and set up his own production label, G-Unit Records. In 2006, is released the film about his own life and of same name as his first album with Shady/Aftermath, "Get Rich Or Die Tryin'". Despite a certain success with the public, this film has been found several weeks in the top 50 of the worse films noted by site IMDB.

Rapper 50 Cent has had a child before becoming famous between two stays in jail, which gives him the wish to stop dealing cocaine and to invest himself in rap music. Rapper 50 Cent has had a relationship with actress Vivica A. Fox. But she was so jealous of the other girls that were around rapper 50 Cent, especially in his video clips, that she leaves rapper 50 Cent.

Rapper 50 Cent counts today as many fans that as many enemies. Indeed, his rap is the object of numerous critics. The real hip hop fans found rapper 50 Cent too commercial, because most of his sounds are made for the clubs, and his rhymes are more and more easy. What is more, rapper 50 Cent put some rappers back, especially New Yorkers: Jadakiss, Ja Rule, Fat Joe, Nas, Sheek Louch and Styles P. Rapper 50 Cent doesn't hesitate to provoke and criticize them in his titles such as "Piggy Bank" from album "The Massacre" (2005). His power and his notoriety allowed rapper 50 Cent to compromise the career of rapper Ja Rule, with whom rapper 50 Cent was in serious conflict.

Since a few months, rapper 50 Cent is in conflict with rapper The Game (Los Angeles), protected by Dr. Dre.

The situation is therefore very complicated, it is one of the very few times that two artists from the same labels are in open conflict. The 2 rappers have collaborated together in the past and they have even sold quite a bit of their singles « How We Do » and « Hate It Or Love It ». The Game has denied on the radio that 50 Cent has contributed to the success of its album "The Documentary" (2005) while according to rapper 50 Cent, it is thanks to him that the album did sales.

Despite all these problems, rapper 50 Cent can still count on a good number of producers such as Dr. Dre, Cool & Dre, Scott Storch, Eminem, and Havoc, with whom rapper 50 Cent entertains good relationships. The rapper from the Queens has also many friends in the rap since he kept signing talents like on his label G-Unit records, which has in no time become very big. As a result, rapper 50 Cent has already signed and collaborated with Mobb Deep, M.O.P., Ma$e, Spider Loc, R&B singer Olivia... Finally rapper 50 Cent still entertains good, not to say very good relations with Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo and Young Buck (the 3 initial members of G-Unit), as well as with Jay-Z and Missy Elliott. Rapper 50 Cent belongs to the Crips, a street gang present in Los Angeles, and a little bit everywhere in North America.

If you are a rapper 50 Cent fan and love to listen to rapper 50 Cent, then you can customize your cell phone by downloading rapper 50 Cent ringtones [http://www.ringtonejamjam.com/web-directory.html]. Ringtone Jam Jam Famous Singers [http://www.ringtonejamjam.com/famous-singers.html] has it all: 50 Cent music, 50 Cent lyrics, 50 Cent pictures, 50 Cent videos, 50 Cent songs, 50 Cent g unit, 50 Cent wallpapers, 50 Cent news, 50 Cent album, 50 Cent biography, , 50 Cent posters, 50 Cent movies and 50 Cent ringtones.

Advantages of Music Teachers Having Websites

A good resource for music teachers to utilize is a website. It is nice to have their students to use as well as the music teacher themselves. Here are some great reasons why a music teacher website would benefit everyone.

The website would be useful for music teachers because they can keep their documents organized. The site can be organized with different tabs along top of the page.

Some of the tabs could be labeled as compositions, scheduling, shows, and contacts. This way when students are at home, they can easily access their music teacher. This would be great if the music teacher provided private lessons because under the scheduling tab could be a place to sign up for a lesson. The calendar would also show available and unavailable times. This type of organization would benefit the teacher and the student.

A music teacher website is a great idea because it provides information to the students that they may forget. Such information would be music notes and scales. The teacher website could prove to be a good resource for students who are practicing at home and forget how to play or read a note.

Not only will the site benefit the student but it will also be useful to the music teacher as well. By having a website the music teacher will be able to keep all of their music documents, schedules, and show information organized and in one spot.

Another good reason for a music teacher to have a website is to get their information out to other people who are not currently their students. Sometimes perspective students search the internet for a new music teacher.

If you, as a current music teacher, have a website, it is possible that the new student would find your information. This would be an easy way for a new student to contact you and see what you stand for. It is also good because your show announcements would be on the internet, which could provide a larger audience.

Famous Subliminal Messages in Music

There have been many rumors and speculations that famous songs actually contain subliminal messages. Subliminal messages used in songs are verbal or aural in natured, and are delivered either very quickly or backwards at such low volumes that the audience is unaware of receiving it. Such charges are made not just to rock music, but even Christian songs as well!

A famous subliminal message in music would be the song Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin, that apparently when played backwards contains satanic messages. This is a form of reverse subliminal messages. More often than not, these are inserted for entertainment purposes or to increase sales of the album. It has been speculated that Led Zeppelin inserted the message as they thought that if people played the record backwards enough times, it would spoil it and hence lead to increased sales for them!

Other famous subliminal messages in music include one involving The Beatles, specifically the song titled Come Together, which is said to be about sex with John Lennon. Even Britney Spears, in the song "I'm not that Innocent" had supposedly inserted the message "Sleep with me I'm not too young" when played backwards! The rock group Queen's song "Another One Bites the Dust" is also purported to be talking about drug use when played backwards.

Several years ago, there was a court case involving the suing of a rock group "Judas Priest" which had inserted the subliminal message of "Do it" in their song, which the parents felt induced their children to commit suicide.

Before getting carried away and panicking about the various songs that you have listened to before, the real issue is not whether there are actual messages included in songs, but if these have any influence on the audience. If you were to hear such a message played backwards, would you be able to understand it, or subconsciously alter your behavior?

Research has shown that when participants listened to messages recorded backwards, they are unable to decode what it actually was when played normally. Their behavior was not altered in any noticeable way. After all, if listening to metal bands that proclaim death and gore do not induce people to go on a murder rampage, it is unlikely that such subliminal messages in music can have significant adverse effects on the audience.

Dracula Music

As a composer, musician and teacher, it's very likely that I've heard most kinds of music over the years. However, I still love the music of the cinema and, in particular, old horror movie soundtracks (think Hammer Films, etc). Dracula music is a firm favourite!

Let's start with music by Philip Glass, composed for the 1931 Bela Lugosi classic film Dracula and performed by the wonderful Kronos String Quartet.

Glass's minimalist style lends itself well to this subject-matter. The album is modern sounding but with a kind of timeless chamber-music quality, and is a great accompaniment to a dialogue-only film.

The usual Glass fingerprints are here: repetitive ostinati, arpeggios, motifs and rocking two-note bass lines, but touched with tender, lyrical moments. To me (being a melody-man at heart!), it was these melodic moments which prevented this album from becoming too tedious. Don't get me wrong; I enjoy modern, dissonant music, but eventually I long for a damn-good tune and this album gave me something close to that.

Most of the 26 tracks are quite short (1-4 minutes) and, although eerie, are surprisingly tuneful. The string playing is excellent, as you'd expect from the Kronos gang.

Here are a few of my favourite highlights:

"Excellent, Mr. Renfield": an eerie piece with the expected repeated ostinato/riff but with loud scary moments when the quartet suddenly burst in. The ticking bass line keeps things moving and a great winding melody over the top completes the image of the fly-eating lunatic who lives in the asylum!

"The Storm": a violent start to the track, full of discordant harmony and very evocative of a storm. Pizzicato strings produce the rain and fast runs create an impression of speed.

"Horrible Tragedy": not sure if this is bi- or tri-tonal! Sounds like every member of the quartet is playing in a different key. I like its hypnotic qualities and simple short riffs.

"In the Theatre": a great haunting melody and easy chord progressions - reminds me of Phantom of the Opera for some reason!

"Renfield": a surprisingly beautiful and sympathetic sound for our resident madman! Very classical sounding with some predictable chord changes and two-note bass accompaniment, later moving into triplets. Very nice.

This is not the usual blood-spattered Dracula music, full of diminished chords and squealing strings. Yes, it can be repetitive, but Glass seems to be using a greater range of tone colours than usual and, for this style of music, I found it quite tuneful (although you'd be hard-pressed to whistle along with the CD!).

Perhaps the disc gets rather tiring half-way through: 26 tracks is a lot of minimalist music! I have to admit that I've not seen the film with this soundtrack, but I've heard that it complements the images perfectly, especially in 'Carriage Without a Driver', where the spinning wheels are clearly portrayed and the music invokes a sense of menace.

On the whole... I like it!

Make Money As a Rapper

So you wanna make money as a rapper. Well the industry has changed and as much as people say it's saturated, you can still make quite a bit of money. There is no lack involved and there's not too many rappers, so eliminate these thoughts from your mind. One of the mistakes that I see in the industry is rappers only want to be rappers. The way you sustain your career as a rapper has to do with you using rap as a crutch. You simply lean on it, but don't think that it will keep you in your old age. Very few people have hits 10 or 15 years into their career.

The best way to keep yourself entitled to being in the industry is to do something else. I've figured out the way you make money before you get famous is to do something else. Since I've become a rapper, I've published a local magazine (This gets your name out there in print while you sell ads and make money.) I've also produced independent films starring national comedians and rappers. (This gets your face known so you can brand yourself and your label while making good money promoting others.) I've done a ton of things to get my name out there. Perhaps the most diligent one I did was write a street fiction novel. (This was to put my name in print all over the world.) All of these have caused me to make money as a rapper. After doing so many other things, building a name and brand that others know- you'll now be able to sell your music.

OK Here's the Eye Opener, Brace Yourself.

If you are serious about making money, first you need to realize that working a 9 to 5 won't allow you to make much money as a rapper. Think about it, everyone has twenty- four hours in a day right. Right!

Let's say you spend 12 hrs being a shoe salesman. You spend six hours asleep and six hours being a rapper a day. Do you see what is happening? You are having an identity problem. I was the same way. I did this for years before I realized how it worked. I quit my job a few years ago and became a rapper and author on purpose. I know you gotta pay the bills right. Don't let that stop you.

Consider this question: What would you do if you had to come up with $3500 a month for the next three months or you would be thrown in prison for the rest of your natural life? Think about it! I doubt if you would come up short on this money.

That's how it is when you're in entertainment. You have bills just like a person with a 9 to 5, except you live on the fact that you must get paid at your craft each month. Honestly, if you want to get paid as a rapper, I'm not saying you must quit your job today. I am saying that if you want to get paid as a rapper you have to claim the identity of a rapper or whatever it is that your heart desires.

Iced Out Jewelry: From Fad to Mainstream

Iced out jewelry has always been very popular in the rap community and with pro athletes and this was mainly due to the cost of such jewelry. However, in recent years the "bling" has moved its way into the general public and worldwide. More and more people are staring to wear iced out jewelry and the costs are falling very rapidly.

Jewelry that is covered in diamonds and made of rare metals is what most people refer to as "iced out". This type of jewelry has also often been referred to as "bling bling" or just simply "ice". A few of the most popular types of iced out jewelry are; grillz, watches, pendants, necklaces and bracelets. These items usually run in the thousands of dollars but recently companies have begun selling replica hip hop jewelry which in most cases costs less than $100.

One of the most popular pieces of ice out jewelry is the teeth grills. Grills, or grillz, are caps or fittings worn over ones teeth. Recently, pop star Brooke Hogan wore a pair of grillz in her music video for her song "About Us". A set of gold grillz is also a favorite jewelry item of the Cincinnati Bengal football player Chad Johnson. Johnson can often be seen with his gold removable grill while on the football field.

Another popular iced out jewelry item is the hip hop watch. Watches have always been a status symbol of the rich and famous but now almost anyone can have their own version of a hip hop watch for under $30, albeit with fake diamonds and no platinum. Either way, almost anyone can show off their bling with a realistic looking iced out watch.

Iced out pendants and necklaces are also among the list of vastly popular hip hop jewelry. Pendants are items that hang from a necklace and come in a variety of shapes and sized. The most popular iced out pendant is the spinner which was made famous by members of the rap group G-Unit, more specifically rapper 50 Cent. A spinner pendant is worn around the neck and had a piece of metal on it that can be spun in a circle and continues to spin for several minutes. The spinner pendant also has numerous replicas that can be bought from under $25.

Iced out jewelry has officially come to the mainstream with the advent of hip hop replica jewelry. What was once only for the rich is now attainable for people of all incomes and location. Don't be surprised if the next time you are walking through the grocery store you notice someone wearing iced out jewelry.

Creating Your Own Unique Music

Have you ever dreamed of penning your own compositions? Writing music has been a dream of mine for the longest time. And it's a dream I am fortunate enough to have realized.

The idea of having a finished piece of music in front of you is exciting to say the least, but many students rush the process and end up with music that is less than what they originally thought of.

The way around this "compostion trap" as I like to call it is to be able to sit down at the piano or keyboard and be able to play for at least 15-20 minutes without judging what is coming out of you. Once you can do this, your ability to capture musical ideas as they first came to you increase.

First thoughts are powerful!

Your first ideas will ALWAYS BE YOUR BEST IDEAS! Why? Because this music comes straight from the heart and does not have the censorship of the critical mind attached to it. Always improvise first, then memoralize your ideas if you wish. I do this by jotting down an 8-bar section. Once the melody is recognized, I pencil in the first 2-bars and try to fill up the 8-bars with chord changes.

Once I have the first 8-bars, the whole piece is practically done. I usually do not finish a piece in one sitting, however, I do make it a point to at least get 8 bars of music down. This is a very doable goal and one you can accomplish as well!

Diam's Feature Article

Diam's is a testament to Hip Hop's boundless cultural diversity and ability to transcend dialects. A rapper of both French and Greek Cypriot backgrounds, Melanie Georgiades was born in Cyprus on July 25 1980, with her family moving to the small French town of Essones in 1984.

The 1990s saw not only the continued proliferation of Hip Hop music on the American charts and within popular culture itself, but also saw its evolution on a global scale, with local scenes in countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, France and Greece beginning to truly flourish (more so creatively than financially).

It was during this climate, in 1998 to be exact, that 18-year-old Diam's announced her arrival onto the European music stage, signing a developmental contract with BMG Music Publishing France. As she continued to sharpen her writing skills and creativity, she earned the opportunity of a lifetime, signing with Universal Records France in 1999.

Later that year Diam's released her debut solo album, Premier Mandat, an 18-track release which experienced moderate success in Europe. Diam's further boosted her profile with an appearance on the 2002 release (The Story Of) Espion, by respected French Hip Hop/electro producer DJ Mehdi. It was 2003 though that saw her true artistic and commercial breakthrough with the release of the gold-selling Brut de Femme, which spawned the top ten single DJ.

Not a stranger to controversy, Diam's is known for infusing her music with equal doses of dancefloor-friendly material and political commentary; she has displayed fierce opposition to Conservative French President Nicolas Sarkozy, along with extreme-right politician Jean-Marie Le Pen and his daughter Marine Le Pen. In 2004 at the famed Dour Festival in Belgium, the outspoken rapper was greeted with projectiles, which were thrown at her direction as she performed on stage.

Over the course of the following two years her importance as a songwriter and performer was cemented, winning the honor of 'Rap/hip-hop album of the year' at the Victoires de la Musique awards for Brut de Femme. Her biggest hit came that same year in the form of her French adaptation of the English-language smash Ma Philosophie, which was originally a massive number one hit for Pop Idol star Amel Bent.

Not a stranger to collaborations, Diam's has linked up with several gifted contemporaries over the years. She has teamed up with Indonesian singer Anggun on the single Juste Être Une Femme (Just to be a Woman), collaborated with French dancehall/reggae star Admiral T and R&B songbird Vitaa, and has worked extensively with fellow French rapper Sinik (who she has called her "brother").

February 2006 saw the release of her most successful project up to that point, the award-winning and number one-selling album Dans Ma Bulle (Inside my Bubble). Maintaining its top position for six consecutive weeks, it eventually reached diamond status, selling 1,000,000 copies. With a concert DVD, Autour De Ma Bulle, out now, her upcoming project Confessions Nocturnes is set to be her biggest release to date.

Further proving that music is a universal language through her work, Diam's is certainly a force to be reckoned with.

Music is Social

If one of the main reasons we play music is to enjoy it with other musicians or with an audience, why do we ask students (particularly young children) to practice alone all the time? Music is fundamentally social and students will be more motivated to practice if the music teacher helps students to be part of musical social experiences.

For example, there is always the jam session. Getting students together to play with and for each other on a regular basis helps students to interact with other musicians the way adult musicians do. The more informal the session, the more it will feel like being social rather than being a formal performance. For example, the music teacher might have students play duets, trios, or rounds with each other. A jam session might also be an opportunity to teach folk music by ear.

Another way to help students have a social experience with music is to have a friend with whom to take lessons. If you give a thirty-minute lesson to each of two students, you could actually take that hour, and give each one a twenty-minute lesson and then spend twenty minutes on music the two can play with each other.

Often you can pair students who go to the same school. You may find students getting together after school to play music with each other, which reinforces important musical skills of being able to play with other people and which is enormously motivating.

If a parent or other family member plays music, then incorporate that music into the lesson. A parent who plays guitar by ear can accompany folk music tunes that are so great for establishing good tone and intonation. It is helpful if the parent plays something different from the student so that the sessions together are more social than formal, parent-led practice.

Create a small group of students and find venues for playing. If you have a group of students, who play folk tunes, many nursing home and retirement centers will welcome their performances.

Pair up an older student with a younger student as a practice buddy, again thinking of pairing students who live near each other. There is nothing like teaching a skill to help a person learn it. The older student will be reinforcing his or her own skills. Younger children respond well to having an older buddy.

All of these ideas take time and organization, but if they become part of your practice as a music teacher, parents will quickly see the benefits and will likely be willing to pay a small amount extra for their children to be involved. Your students will become stronger musicians who are motivated to play their instruments as a result of your taking advantage of the social nature of music.

Punk Rock Music History

The widespread of rock and punk songs across the world is not as rapid as pop genre but they're truly controversially known as widely listened by funky and wacky teenagers and liberated crowds. You may have heard of groups called Fallout Boy and Metallica. They're just two of the many contemporary rock artists and bands that pave way for liberation and loudness in terms of music. The earlier bands to be known are Sex Pistols and the Scientists. Following a proto-punk genre in the late 1960's, the punk rock music history kicked off when Ramones Band led the way in said genre.

Rebellion, liberation and victory are the usual themes of punk and rock tunes. Back in the 70's, punk rock music history revealed that the masses never really appreciated the roughness of instrumentals and politically controversial approach of punk rock. In the United Kingdom, early punk bands failed to win the hearts of song fanatics. They didn't establish mainstream success quite easily not until the late 90's due to the emergence of alternative rock tunes. Delusions, depressions and harsh revelations are reflected in the lyrics of punk rock, which is why only certain groups of individuals could adhere to this line of sounds.

As accounted in punk rock music history, the commencements of liberated songs were frequently debated between fanatics of ballads and lovers of alternative rock. There have been varying opinions about punk rock. Some say that they are garage tunes, which actually started when the band called Sonics played without defined musicals, no instrumental standards and lack of music rules. More bands like MC5, Velvet Underground and Stooges made their debut in the late 1960's, and they created a more controversial and vulgar image for the punk rock genre. New York Dolls and David and Bowie delivered influential inspirations of rock and roll that's largely outrageous and far different from the approach that Elvis Presley established long before they launched their music.

At the beginning of 1990's, there surfaced to be a punk revival of a few bands that didn't quite had a good start 30 decades back. The format of punk rock music is usually straightforward and realistic depicting crime issues, government agenda, social ills and other societal struggles. In punk rock music history, Iggy Pop was deemed to be the godfather of punk music. It was apparent that revolutionary scene of music in the 1970's paved way to the distinctiveness of fashion and music style of rockers and punk artists which have their certain niche of followers. Such certain punk look is exemplified in leather jeans and jackets, darkened eyelids, long polished nails and sporty get-up has remained to be apparent among famous punk artists of today's generation.

Download Music To Zune

Just got your Zune player and wondered how to download music to Zune. Well, it is actually pretty easy particularly if you already own other types of mp3 players such as the iPod.

To download music to Zune is pretty similar to the iPod. However instead of using itunes software, we use the windows media player. If you want to rip CD and download music to your Zune, all you need to do is place your CD into your computer. Open windows media player. Select Your CD and a list of songs should appear.

Select the songs you want and click on the Rip button or you can right-click and the option should appear. The ripped songs should appear in your windows media player library. Next, plug in your Zune via the USB cable. By default settings, the Zune player will automatically synchronize with the media library and download all songs to the Zune player.

If it does not synchronize properly, you may need to manually copy the music files to the Zune player. It will show up usually as a removable drive on your computer. Usually it is E drive but will depend on your computer configuration.

Do note that the Zune player only plays windows media player supported formats such as WMA, WMV, MP3, MP4 and MOV. It will not support RM (Realmedia) or DIVX format so make sure you select the correct music format when ripping CD.

The other way to download music to your Zune player is to purchase it from a web store. Examples are itunes and Napster. Microsoft has also set a Zune marketplace where there are more than 2 million soundtracks you can purchase and download. The prices ranges from $0.99 to $2.49 each.

There is another option if you plan to download music to Zune which is to join a paid Zune membership site. These websites have millions of soundtracks for you to download all for a one time charge or a one year period. It is definitely more cost effective and cheaper in the long run.

As you can see, it is not difficult to download music to your Zune player. All you need to do is click a few buttons and synchronize and it's done.

Music Downloads: Where Can I Find Music To Download?

Music downloads are very popular right now and rightfully so. Just image having access to thousands of songs with the ability to get your own digital copy. The proliferation of iPods, iTunes, Napster, MP3 players, high speed internet connections, and CD burners has made the world ripe for digital music. How do you get digital music? You download music to your PC. That's how.

Where can you find music downloads? There are several services online that provide music download to their customer. You can download music from Walmart for $.88 per song. That is a pretty good deal and they have a nice selection of songs. For the iPod owners out there, you can download music from iTunes. They also have a real nice selection of music and they charge $.99 per song.

If you don't want to use either of those services then you may want to try Napster. Napster actually popularized music downloads back when they gave users access to songs for free. The free music swapping was, of course, shut down and now they charge $9.95 per month for unlimited access to their music library. They currently advertise a selection of 1,500,000+ songs.

Today's version of Napster is called Kazaa. It allows users to share music files amongst themselves. Music downloads through Kazaa are free for now, but expect Kazaa to eventually go the way of Napster. Music companies do not like people to download music for free so the free music downloads will not last forever.

MP3.com also provides visitors music downloads. They actually sell songs through other sites, but they allow you to find and listen to songs before you make a purchase. They have a good selection of songs and even off some music downloads for free.

One last place to look for music downloads is in music user groups. It is common for users in those groups to share music, so you should be able to find music to download if you look hard enough.

For more information on cell phones and the companies that provide cell phone service simply run a search for "music download" or "download music" on Google and you will get plenty of addtional information.
