Music is Social

If one of the main reasons we play music is to enjoy it with other musicians or with an audience, why do we ask students (particularly young children) to practice alone all the time? Music is fundamentally social and students will be more motivated to practice if the music teacher helps students to be part of musical social experiences.

For example, there is always the jam session. Getting students together to play with and for each other on a regular basis helps students to interact with other musicians the way adult musicians do. The more informal the session, the more it will feel like being social rather than being a formal performance. For example, the music teacher might have students play duets, trios, or rounds with each other. A jam session might also be an opportunity to teach folk music by ear.

Another way to help students have a social experience with music is to have a friend with whom to take lessons. If you give a thirty-minute lesson to each of two students, you could actually take that hour, and give each one a twenty-minute lesson and then spend twenty minutes on music the two can play with each other.

Often you can pair students who go to the same school. You may find students getting together after school to play music with each other, which reinforces important musical skills of being able to play with other people and which is enormously motivating.

If a parent or other family member plays music, then incorporate that music into the lesson. A parent who plays guitar by ear can accompany folk music tunes that are so great for establishing good tone and intonation. It is helpful if the parent plays something different from the student so that the sessions together are more social than formal, parent-led practice.

Create a small group of students and find venues for playing. If you have a group of students, who play folk tunes, many nursing home and retirement centers will welcome their performances.

Pair up an older student with a younger student as a practice buddy, again thinking of pairing students who live near each other. There is nothing like teaching a skill to help a person learn it. The older student will be reinforcing his or her own skills. Younger children respond well to having an older buddy.

All of these ideas take time and organization, but if they become part of your practice as a music teacher, parents will quickly see the benefits and will likely be willing to pay a small amount extra for their children to be involved. Your students will become stronger musicians who are motivated to play their instruments as a result of your taking advantage of the social nature of music.

Music Scales For Beginners

A music scale usually refers to a progression of single notes upwards or downwards in steps. The word scale comes from the Latin word la scala which means ladder, or stairway. A musical scale is a ladder of notes that runs from the root note to the octave note (octave means eight, as in octopus, octagon, etc., therefore eight notes in a scale.)

Most beginners in music are introduced to the concept of scales very early in their training. Despite this, it sometimes takes a few years of training to get good understanding of how scales work.

A scale begins with a root, called the tonic. In a C scale (the first one most beginning musicians learn) the tonic note is C. The scale progresses either up or downward until it reaches the same note in the next octave. The C scale is an easy example. It begins with the tonic C. Going upward, the notes following are D, E, F, G, A, B and C. Downward, the note progression is C, B, A, G, F, E, D and C. The C scale has a total of eight notes. The distance from the tonic note to the next note of the same name is referred to as an octave. A scale in eight notes is called a diatonic scale.

Most modern instruments, including the piano, actually contain 12 notes in an octave. This is because semitones are included. The notes that comprise the semitones on a piano in a C scale are the black keys. A scale that includes the semitones is known as a chromatic scale. A chromatic C scale going upwards would be C, C sharp, D, D sharp, E, F, F sharp, G, G sharp, A, A sharp, B and C. Downward, the notes are C, B, B flat, A, A flat, G, G flat, F, E, E flat, D, D flat and C.

A pentatonic scale is scale of five notes. Pentatonic scales are not often used in Western music. The major exception to this rule would be in American blues and some rock music. They are preferred in other cultures though, such as Asian. Pentatonic scales are also common in Celtic and African music. Less common are hexatonic (six steps) and heptatonic scales (seven steps). Scales may also be octatonic (containing eight steps). These are commonly found in modern classical and jazz music.

The intervals between the notes on any scale (diatonic, chromatic, etc.) determine the type of scale. An interval is defined as the distance between two notes. They are also sometimes referred to as steps. Scales can be major (M), minor (m), perfect (P), augmented (A) or diminished (d or dim). The type of scale is determined by the size of the intervals. Interval sizes can be unisons, seconds, thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths and sevenths. Major and minor scales are 2nds, 3rds, 6ths, and 7ths. Unisons, 4ths, 5ths and octaves are perfect.

Sometimes scales may be referred to as modal. A simple definition of a modal scale is a series of notes in a scale, but which lack a primary or tonic note. Therefore many scales may have several modes. For example, every major scale actually has seven different modal scales.

It can take several years of training before a musician gets a good handle on scales and chords. However, even the youngest and newest of musicians use scales and the principles behind them every day. Mastering their theory may come later. Of course, every musician knows that only practice makes perfect!

Violins, often known for classical music, are now world wide. Violins are now played in country, jazz, rock, bluegrass and blues.

The Violin is a stringed instrument. There are two kinds of stringed instruments: plucking and bowing. Plucking instruments, like harps and lyres, were around long before the bowing instruments.

Violins have origins that come from Asia with a good example being: The Mongolian Murin Huur. The present form of the violin is from 16th century Italy, in the towns of Vince and Genoa, historically both had strong trade ties with Mongolia. The Erhu was developed in China, the Esraj in India and the Rebab was developed in the Middle East.

Like other classical European instruments, the violin has four strings. The four strings on a violin is tuned with pegs to perfect Fifths, from left to right as held in a plying position with the left hand: G, D, A and E.

Violins come in many different sizes for adults to children under under three. The largest violin is 4/4 or Full Size Violin. A full size violin is recommended for violinists age 11 Years and above or those with an arm length of 23.5 inches and up.

The following chart is violin size recommendations based on violinists age and (AL) arm lengths:

3/4 - 9 to 11 years old with an AL of 22 to 23.5 inches.

1/2 - 6 to 10 years old with a length of arm of 20 to 22 inches.

1/4 - 4 to 7 years old with an AL of 17.5 to 20 inches.

1/8 - 3 to 5 years old with a length of arm of 17 to 17.5 inches.

1/10 - 3 to 5 years old, with an arm length of 15 to 17 inches.

1/16 - 3 to 5 years old. with an arm length of 14 to 15 inches.

A finely made violin smaller then 1/2 size is rare or does not exist.
