Songs You Love to Love: The Top Ten Tunes for Valentine's Day

Ah, the power of love! Your heart beats faster, your eyes open wider, and you're much more likely to listen to a love song. Each February 14, and during the weeks leading up to Valentine's Day, the musical choices of the nation turn more romantic.

Over the years, some wonderfully potent love songs have been recorded. In fact, the most difficult part of writing this article was trimming the list down to just ten tunes.

So, if you don't find your favorite love song here, send me an e-mail at scott@gmanmusic.com and let me know your desires on the subject. Meanwhile, you might want to visit http://www.romantic-lyrics.com or http://www.theromantic.com for a large selection of songs, often with the complete lyrics.

But right now, sit back, relax, pop a chocolate bon-bon in your mouth, and read some surprising facts about the Top Ten Love Songs for Valentine's Day (in chronological order):

"Someone to Watch Over Me," George and Ira Gershwin, 1926.

The birthplace of this lovely and moody number was an otherwise light and frothy Broadway musical called "Oh, Kay." The song was originally fast-paced, but soon moved to the ballad form, in keeping with the lyrics. There have been evocative renditions of the song every year since it was first composed, with a wide variety of artists contributing notable versions, including Rosemary Clooney, Doris Day, Judy Garland, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Elton John, rapper Queen Latifah (although hers is not a rap version), trumpeter Chris Botti, pianist Keith Jarrett, blues legend Etta James, Barbra Streisand, and Sting, who sang it over the opening credits of the 1987 Ridley Scott film of the same name.

"Night and Day," by Cole Porter, 1932.

Written for the play, "Gay Divorce," and also appearing in the film, "The Gay Divorcee," this may be the most famous of Porter's 800+ songs, and illustrates his seemingly effortless flow of words, culminating in the bold statement that all of life's torments won't end "Till you let me spend my life making love to you, day and night, night and day." Such is the economy of Porter's writing that this one phrase combines the singer's desire with a promise of eternal love while managing to invert and restate the title, all in 17 words. It's why many songwriters would want to say to Porter, "You're the Top," which is another of his famous songs, and would have made this list if it wasn't also so full of humor.

"Unchained Melody," Alex North and Hy Zaret, 1936.

William Stirrat was 16 and too shy to approach the girl of his dreams, so he wrote one of the world's most beautiful tales of love and longing (using Zaret as his pen name). The breathtaking melody was by Alex North (who went on to compose scores for "Spartacus," "Cleopatra," and many other films). It took 19 years before their song appeared in the prison picture, "Unchained," where it was nominated for a Best Song Oscar. Al Hibbler sang it in the film, but that same year saw the song hit the charts in versions by Hibbler, Les Baxter, Roy Hamilton, and June Valli. Among the nearly 700 artists who have recorded this song are Harry Belafonte, Liberace, Jimmy Young, U2, Leann Rimes, Neil Diamond, Willie Nelson, Heart, Elvis Presley, and, of course, the Righteous Brothers. Their 1965 recording was a huge hit, and reached the top twenty again a quarter century later when it appeared on the "Ghost" soundtrack in 1990. The duo re-recorded the song the same year and THAT version also hit the top twenty.

"First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," by Ewan MacColl, 1957.

A long, slowly-building flame is how some people describe the version sung by Roberta Flack, which created a sensation when it appeared in Clint Eastwood's 1971 directorial debut, "Play Misty for Me." Experimental playwright and folk singer MacColl wrote it 14 years earlier for his partner, Peggy Seeger, who needed a romantic song for a play. Written in less than an hour, the song virtually defines the term "love song." Flack's is the definitive rendition, but the song has been recorded by dozens of performers in many genres, including Johnny Cash, Celine Dion, Elvis Presley, Mel Torme, Isaac Hayes, Gordon Lightfoot, and George Michael.

"Cherish," by Terry Kirkman, 1966.

Kirkman reportedly wrote this lovely song in a half-hour while he was the keyboard player in the overlooked Los Angeles-based band The Association. Featuring wonderfully expressive vocal harmonies, the song is actually about unrequited love, but its feeling of desire is so strong that this tune still gets played at weddings and anniversary parties. Some Internet sites explain that the recording was nearly three and a half minutes long, which was a bit much for radio play in those days, so the song was sped up to 3:13 but listed on the label as 3:00. It later became the first hit for David Cassidy, star of TV's "The Partridge Family," but that shouldn't dissuade you from checking out the original.

"God Only Knows," by Brian Wilson, 1966.

Although it begins with the line, "I may not always love you," the rest of the song is as assertive about undying love as anything ever written. In the recording by the Beach Boys, Carl Wilson's lead vocal achieves a rarified combination of strength and tenderness and the entire track is ethereal in its beauty. Cover versions of the song appear in the films "Boogie Nights" and "Saved," while the original is at the end of the charming Richard Curtis film, "Love, Actually."

"Your Song," by Elton John and Bernie Taupin, 1967.

It is said that the original lyric sheet has coffee stains on it because Taupin wrote the song at breakfast one morning at the home of John's parents, where he and the soon-to-be-superstar artist were living. While some mistakenly think this was the first John/Taupin collaboration, it was one of their earliest works. John reportedly wrote the melody in 20 minutes. The song perfectly captures the sense of wonder experienced by anyone who has fallen in love.

"I Will Always Love You," by Dolly Parton, 1974.

When Dolly Parton ended her professional songwriting relationship with Porter Wagoner, she wrote this heartfelt breakup song even though they were not romantically involved. The result was a number one country hit for Parton. She recorded another version for the 1978 film, "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas," and again hit number one on the country charts. Whitney Houston's version of the song appeared in the 1992 film, "The Bodyguard," and dominated the pop, soul and adult contemporary charts for weeks. Not a day goes by without someone playing it to demonstrate the depth of their love, which is ironic since it is a song about saying goodbye.

"Heaven," by Jim Vallance and Bryan Adams, 1983.

Written for the thankfully forgotten 1983 film "A Night in Heaven," the song also appeared on Adams' "Reckless" album the following year and hit number one. Today, a whole new generation knows the song from DJ Sammy's 2002 dance version, which was recorded with Yanou and features vocals by Do (Dominique van Hulst). This modern, rhythmic version, which has dance floor clout yet still conveys the swirling all-encompassing passion of love, now appears in more than a dozen different remixes and has charted in nearly two dozen countries.

"In Your Eyes," by Peter Gabriel, 1986.

This track from Gabriel's "So" album has been called the most beautiful love song ever recorded. There's no denying its passion and power, with unusual chords and lyrics that touch on spiritual and metaphysical themes. Film director Cameron Crowe worked hard (and reportedly paid two hundred thousand dollars) to get the song into his film, "Say Anything" (in the scene where John Cusack holds a boom box over his head). Another popular story about the song is that it was written for Gabriel's then girlfriend, Rosanna Arquette. If true, it would mean she had two hit songs written for her that decade, as she is the subject of Toto's "Rosanna" from 1982.

Top Three Blues Instrumental Music Songs

What are the best blues instrumental music tracks? It's a great question. Blues and lyrics go hand in hand, but what if you want just the blues without all the words? With that question in mind I set out to find the best instrumentals buried amongst the blues musical landscape. Here is my list of the best blues instrumentals and a little background on the musicians that gave them life.

The #1 spot on my blues instrumental music chart goes to "Juke" by Little Walker. Little Walker, whose real name is Marion Walter Jacobs, is a well known and respected blues singer, harmonica player, and guitarist. He is one of the greats and has been compared to other great artists like Charlie Parker and Jimi Hendrix. He changed people's views on what they expected from a harmonica player by showing them what was possible. In March of 2008 he was placed in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the sideman category and was the only artist to get in for his work with a harmonica.

The #2 spot on my blues instrumental music chart goes to "Hide Away" by Freddie King. Freddie King, also known as "The Texas Cannonball", was a great blues guitarist and singer. His guitar style was based off of Texas and Chicago influences that he developed over his twenty year recording career. He has inspired many great musicians such as Bill Freeman, Denny Campbell, and Jimmie Vaughan. He also was one of the first artists to have a multi-racial band on stage with him. Sadly, at the young age of 42, King passed away due to heart failure on December 28, 1979.

The #3 spot on my blues instrumental music chart goes to "Albatross" by Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green. Fleetwood Mac is a British/American rock band started back in 1967. Through the years the band members came and went, but they still were able to gain some success. The only band member to stay throughout was drummer Mick Fleetwood. Their most successful period is when they were led by guitarist Peter Green in the late 1960s.

These are just a few of my favorite instrumental music tracks and they are just skimming the surface of all the great blues instrumentals out there. I hope you enjoyed reading about them and challenge you to get out there and find some of your own and share them with the world. Until next time.

Online Beat Maker Or Home Studio - Choosing The Best Music Production Center (MPC)

Music Production Centers (MPCs) are a popular choice for laying down tracks and making beats, and for good reason. MPCs offer aspiring and successful producers alike a one-stop-shop beat making machine. The attraction of this technology is that it combines real time sampling facilities with drum machine programming allowing the producer to lay down multi track beats. In fact MPCs have been instrumental in the evolution of Hip Hop and Rap as well as other urban music genres and have facilitated the on-going explosion of new and up-and coming producers.

So how do MPCs work? Well every MPC has the same basic set-up. They have a number of tap pads plus a range of controls that manage the volume levels and effects and of course a screen output that shows track sequencing. Samples are assigned to the pads for example kick drums, snare drums, high hats, piano, guitar and bass. These samples can either be taken from audio sources such as vinyl, CD or mp3 files or purchased as complete instrumental libraries.

You can create the track in two ways. If you have good timing you can start by tapping out the groove on the pads and then build the beat by adding tracks, each time adding the sample by tapping the pad. If your timing isn't so great or if you start to build up a large number of tracks in your beat then you can simply use the sequencer to lay down the required samples at the precise point in each bar that you want.

But isn't this expensive? It all depends on your point of view. An entry level MPC will set you back just under $1000 and you can quite easily spend $2-3000. When compared to the set-up cost of a professional studio rig, its small change. But for an aspiring producer just starting out this is a veritable fortune.

The good news is that there are now a number of beat makers available online that are basically virtual MPCs and they have many of the same features. You can build multiple tracks, tap out grooves on virtual tap pads and make arrangements using the sequencing controls. And because they are software based, they have features that are only found on top end MPCs. For example using virtual piano keys to input samples is a great way to build melody lines. Usually you would need a midi controller or synthesizer to do this in a hardware based studio.

The Top 10 Facts About the Next Blue Moon, a Song and Other Things By the Same Name

Have you ever wondered what the real definition of a blue moon is? Do you know when the next one will occur? How much do you know about the song "Blue Moon" and other things by the same name?

After you read this article, you will know probably, more than you ever thought you could know about everything that calls itself "Blue Moon!"

Popular things named "Blue Moon" aside from the song and the event

1. Beads. Blue Moon Beads are colorful and usually inexpensive beads. The main types are glass, Czech and both.

2. Beer. The beer by the same name is brewed by BMBC in Toronto, Canada.

Blue Moon the song

3. It was recorded by The Marcels in 1961 and spent several weeks as the number 1 song on many of the pop charts in the U.S. The Marcels took their name from a popular hairstyle. The hairstyle was one, which consisted of deep curls. The name was suggested by one of the group members' kid sisters. The Marcels were from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and formed in 1959.

4. It was written by Lorenz Hart and Richard Rogers to be a show tune for a movie called "Manhattan Melodrama" in 1934. However, the words were different in the original song. Hart wrote the now familiar words after the film had been released. The song was a slow ballad. The words "Blue moon, you saw me standing alone, without a dream in my heart, without a love of my own" were sung slowly and tearfully.

These words were part of the chorus. In fact, only the chorus is sung in the Marcels' version. Their version was not music to Richard Rogers' ears. After he heard "Bah bi ba-bah, di-dang-a-dang dang, etc, he was quoted as saying he hated it. Of course, he might have been the only one who hated this do-wop classic.

5. It was Billboard's number 7 song of the year 1961. Number 1 for 1961 was "Tossin' and Turnin'" by Bobby Lewis. Number 2 was "Big Bad John" by Jimmy Dean. 3- "Runaway" by Del Shannon.

There were many other very popular hits in 1961 such as "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", "Runaround Sue", "Michael (Row Your Boat Ashore)", "Mr. Postman", "Quarter to Three", Ray Charles' "Hit the Road, Jack" and Elvis' "Surrender."

Blue Moon the event

6. The official definition of a blue moon is: "the third full moon in a season that contains four full moons." Since a season is three months long, most seasons have three full moons. When there are four in a season, the third one is considered blue.

7. A calendar blue moon is the second full moon in a month. Since the full moon cycle is 29.53059 days and most months are longer than that, it is possible to have two full moons in one month. If there are, the second one is a calendar blue moon.

Sometimes, there is no full moon in February and two in both January and March. In this case, there are two calendar blue moons in a span of three months, but the only true "Blue Moon" is the first one in March because this full moon is the third one in a season of four.

8. Most charts calculate moon cycles based on Greenwich Mean Time. So, actually a moon may be full in your area on a different day or month. So, technically, though it would be rare, a blue moon could occur in different areas on different days, months or even seasons or years!

9. "Once in a Blue Moon" refers to a very rare event, such as the possible situation mentioned in the paragraph above.

10. The last one happened on June 7, 2007. The next one will be on December 2, 2009. If you miss that one, you will have to wait until August 31, 2012 to see another one.

There you have 10 facts, some of which are not well known, about a relatively rare occurrence in nature. So, this article has come to an end and I feel it is best to conclude by saying:

Bah-bi-bi-bah,

Bi-ba-bah-bi-ba-bah,

Bi-bi-bah-bi-bi-bah,

Di-di-dang di-di-dang,

Di-di-di-di-dong-ding,

Blue moon.

Top 5 Acoustic Guitar Solos of All Time

There obviously aren't as many acoustic guitar solos around as there are electric guitar solos. However, that is what makes them very special and it tells you that it is no easy task. The beauty about acoustic guitar solos is that the sound out of the instrument and strings is pretty much pure natural. Unlike a lot of electric guitar solos out there much of the sound is distorted.

What makes a great acoustic guitar solo? A lot of music played on acoustic guitars is slower tempo than solos played on electric guitars and they can be very melodic. Playing a beautiful solo on an acoustic guitar sure means you have talent.

Top 5 acoustic guitar solos of all time

1. The Eagles - Hotel California (acoustic version)

The Eagles are a great band to anybody and 'Hotel California' is known by many. The original song made use of two acoustic guitars played simultaneously as an intro solo. However the acoustic version of the song played the end solos on the acoustic and is a beautiful, yet soulful rendition of the original.

2. Guns N Roses - Patience

Guns n Roses are capable of whacking out a song of any kind. 'Patience' sure describes the song and the atmosphere backed up by the acoustic sounds of Slash's lovely intro solo.

3. John Butler - Ocean

This artist is simply amazing. All of John Butler's music is acoustic based. 'Ocean' contains no lyrics because he solos throughout this song. It is worth noting the speed of the piece changes constantly from slow to fast which is also melodic. He provides all the necessary sound using his guitar only. Incredible! Well worth a listen to this guy

4. John Butler - Funky Tonight

This song contains a beautiful solo towards the end which contains rhythm and also melodic all in one and is played quite rapidly. John Butler sure knows how to blend rhythm with single soloing notes. One word, Awesome!

5. Pink Floyd - Wish you Were Here

This song is one reason what makes this band rock mammoth and why Pink Floyd's music is so melodic. 'Wish you were here is performed acoustically though out by David Gilmour. The great thing about 'Wish you were here' is that it contains three solos, intro, middle and outro. This solo, well actually, the full song really takes you somewhere. David Gilmour proves through his soloing skills that speed is no meaning for an amazing guitar solo. He is simply one of the greatest guitarists in the world.

Brazil Song

With the advancements in technology, everyone can just have an access to various types of songs from all over the world. If you have lived all your life in America and if you haven't been exposed to other cultures, think again for you might have just been introduced to other cultures in one way or another. Thanks to the power of the internet; thus, the world that we are living in has just become smaller. All you need to do is to open your computer and if you have an internet connection, then you can just be amazed that by simply keying in certain words, you can already have the entire world in front of you.

As an essential factor of culture, music varies from one tradition to another. It can actually be considered as a primary determinant as far as getting to know one's culture is concerned. The truth is people get a clear picture of the kind of culture and traditions a group of people or a particular country has depending on the type of songs or the kind of music that they play. Americans have made a major impact on the music of the world and the world of music as it introduced a lot of genres that deviated from the classical genres of music introduced by the Europeans ever since the start of man's history. Most of the genres introduced by the Americans and have been steering the music world include R&B, hip hop, and Pop. The same goes true for other countries of the East like China and Korea that have been making noise in the music world with their innovations in music and pop culture. In South America, one of the most prominent sounds that resonate and that have influence other genres of songs comes from Brazil.

Even though it has a certain feel that it's from the Latin America, Brazil Song happens to define what Latin music is all about. Although it can be contested that Mexican songs really define what Latin music is, some cultural anthropologists debate on the authenticity of Mexican songs as purely Latin American because of the heavy influence of Hispanic origins that have played a major role in the cultures and traditions of Mexico. Perhaps, it can be said that among the Latin American countries, Brazil has produced several genres of music that have affected the entire world the same as the Americans did.

Two of the most popular genres of music that are originally Brazilian and that have been playing on the airwaves throughout the world are Bossa Nova and Samba. These two Brazil Song are exactly opposite in terms of their beat and tempo, but these have Brazil in its blood. Bossa Nova is a slow and mellow type of music that is known to have a very relaxing effect. On the other hand, a Samba is a very upbeat type of music that relies heavily on the beat of the drums or congas.

If you happen to admire the beauty of Brazilian music, then with the power of the internet, you can just download these songs for a particular price and you can enjoy these at your home.

Top 10 Wedding First Dance Songs & Ideas

Your first dance as a newly married couple is symbolic; it is the first time outside of the ceremony you are officially announced as husband and wife. As you take your first steps together on the dance floor, you are reminded that your relationship is symbolic of your dancing, it ebbs and flows with the changing tempo, you have synchronized your life together just as you synchronize your footsteps on the dance floor.

The first dance also symbolizes the beginning of your reception party, the big kick off of your celebration. Family and friends have gathered here besides you to celebrate your new life together. What you select for a first dance song should be important and meaningful to you as a couple. Top 50 Songs From The 80's

80's was a big year for me. It was this period when I got deep and heavy into Music. Already from a musical family, my own personal impact into this field started in the 80's when I was listening to my choice of music. It became more than just an interest or a hobby. I literally became a 'collector' of songs 'listened to'. Yep..that may sound strange but what I mean is I actually made every attempt and sought every opportunity to listen to all the songs that I could...and ever since.

In dedication to this period, I took up a project to list out 50 Songs from each year in this period i.e. 1980 - 1989. We are talking of an extremely large range of songs, talents, artists and stars. Songs ranging from the 1980 Pink Floyd release of 'Another Brick In the Wall' to the 1989 Roxette hit - 'The Look'. How music has traversed in this period?

Having listed my top 50 of each year, I then decided to compile a list of the top 50 from across the whole period.

This is where the problem started. How on earth could limit this amazing period to just 50 tracks. I literally banged my head against the wall. This was way too tough. The 80's saw classics being recorded and released which changed the way we listen to music today. It created stars who today are the main source of a thriving industry. Try hard as I could, I just didn't know which songs to delete from the list. Every one of them revolutionary and impacting. But then again, a job had to be done and I did it.

Listed below is a list of top 50 songs, I believe which defined the 80's. This list is based on not only its 'hit' factor at the time, but more so on its influence on the industry on the whole. Its iconic impact and relevance even today in 2011. These tracks are timeless.

Although listed 1-50, there was no way I could actually rank them. Every song earned its way to this list. So please do not take the numbers as a ranking! It is for this reason they have been listed by year of release.

Do send me your feedback if you think any song on this list should have been replaced with another.

01. Another Brick In The Wall - Pink Floyd
02. Eye Of The Tiger (From the OST Rocky III) - Survivor
03. Africa - Toto
04. Beat It - Michael Jackson
05. Every Breath You Take - The Police
06. Karma Chameleon - Culture Club
07. Careless Whispers - Wham
08. Footloose - Kenny Loggins
09. Girls Just Want To Have Fun - Cyndi Lauper
10. Hello - Lionel Richie
11. I Just Called To Say I Love You - Stevie Wonder
12. Infatuation - Rod Stewart
13. Like A Virgin - Madonna
14. Purple Rain - Prince
15. Radio Ga Ga - Queen
16. Rio - Duran Duran
17. Thriller - Michael Jackson
18. Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go - Wham!
19. What's Love Got To Do With It - Tina Turner
20. Broken Wings - Mr. Mister
21. Every Time You Go Away - Paul Young
22. Everybody Wants To Rule The World - Tears For Fears
23. I Want to Know What Love Is - Foreigner
24. Money For Nothing - Dire Straits
25. Summer Of '69 - Bryan Adams
26. Take On Me - A-Ha
27. We Are The World - USA for Africa
28. Do They know it's Christmas - Band Aid
29. Addicted To Love - Robert Palmer
30. Kiss - Prince & The Revolution
31. Manic Monday - Bangles
32. Walking Like An Egyptian - Bangles
33. Bad - Michael Jackson
34. Faith - George Michael
35. Heaven Is a Place on Earth - Belinda Carlisle
36. Higher Love - Steve Winwood
37. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - U2
38. Where The Street Have No Name - U2
39. I've Had The Time Of My Life (From the OST Dirty Dancing) - Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes
40. La Bamba (From the OST La Bamba) - Los Lobos
41. Luka - Suzanne Vega
42. The Lady in Red - Chris DeBurgh
43. Don't Worry Be Happy - Bobby McFerrin
44. Fast Car - Tracy Chapman
45. Another Day In Paradise - Phil Collins
46. Eternal Flame - Bangles
47. The Best - Tina Turner
48. The Living Years - Mike & The Mechanic
49. The Look - Roxette
50. We Didn't Start the Fire - Billy Joel

There it is.

Very hard work and I sadly had to omit a number of tracks and artists such as Whitney Houston. In her case I personally felt whilst her 80's tracks were amazing it was really her cover of Dolly Parton's 'I will Always Love You' which was iconic and had her name out there in a different cadre altogether. Similarly Madonna had a number of hits but it was really just 'Like A Virgin' which created the enigma which today is Madonna.

Do listen to these again and 'Happy Retro Music Listening'!

The Best Laptop For Music?

Wanna go mobile with a powerful recording machine? Yes, the best laptop for music production... they do exist but you need to make sure you get the right one. I know them all, good and bad so hear me out.

Lots of people are going mobile these days and I did the same thing a while ago... I left my big old desktop computer for a sleek brand new laptop, it was a Mac Powerbook to be exact.

It used to be that if you were serious about recording in your home studio on a computer you pretty much had to go with a tower, or desktop to get enough power to run your audio recording software program. Well, over the last few years some manufactures have really put some effort into getting that same power that was only found on the big towers into their laptops and some of those have even made specialized models specifically for music production.

Now when I talk about the best laptop for music I don't mean one that has a great pair of heavy duty built-in speakers to crank up your mp3's! We are talking about the best laptop for music production so let's take a peak under the hood shall we?

You can't spend $500 on the same computer a school kid does and expect to have a powerful enough recording machine. A typical laptop these days might have something like this:

Intel core i3 2.26 GHz processor
4GB of RAM
SATA 5400 RPM Hard Drive
14" Display

And almost no external ports other than a few USB ports. Compare those specs to something like the Roc Box Laptop made by PCAudioLabs:

Intel Core i5 2.40GHz (520) Processor
up to 8GB of RAM
SATA2 7200rpm Hard Drive
15.6" Display

And as far as external ports which are very necessary in your studio... 1 eSATA port, 2 Firewire 400 ports, 3 USB ports, 2 channel HD audio with 3D stereo enhanced sound system.

The most important differences here are very key things that you'll notice when recording...

Slightly faster processor, double the RAM (this is huge), the Hard Drive speed of 7200 is mandatory for most recording software programs, and of course the extra ports, most importantly Firewire. The PCAudioLab Rok Box Mobile Laptop HD Computer rivals some of the Rok Box desktop models which were also designed specifically with music production in mind.

Top 10 First Dance Wedding Songs 2011

Wedding first dances are a very personal affair, and by no means are they compulsory, but they are a tradition that guests wait eagerly for, and there can always be the pressure as to what song to play. Do you go with something that'll please the guests, or something more personal to yourselves, or perhaps you'll find a happy medium that everybody's contented with. Hopefully, this article will be a help for those still choosing.

I present to you a compact selection of songs including a couple of contemporary pieces and a handful of classics for the Top 10 First Dance Wedding Songs of 2011.
Mariah Carey - I Want To Know What Love Is
Alicia Keys - Unthinkable
Corinne Bailey Rae - Closer
Etta James - At Last
The Stylistics - Betcha By Golly Wow
Chaka Khan - Sweet Thing
The Carpenters - We've Only Just Begun
Shania Twain - From This Moment On
Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You
Jason Mraz - I'm Yours

Mariah Carey - I Want To Know What Love Is
Originally sung by Foreigner, Mariah updated the 80s love song, and gave it an R&B and gospel twist. It's definitely as powerful as the original, and the words are refreshing and vulnerable.

Alicia Keys - Unthinkable
This song can take on several meanings. It's all about taking that next step, making a commitment, whether it's committing to a serious relationship or even going further and getting married. It's a sincere and beautiful song.

Corinne Bailey Rae - Closer
Corinne's lush voice over a sensual beat and a delicious bass-line makes this a serious contender for a first dance piece.

Etta James - At Last
At Last, famously sung by Etta James, was written almost 20 years before she released it, and covered by a couple dozen of other artists, like Miles Davis, Nat King Cole, Ben E King, Judy Garland, Doris Day, The Fatback Band, Celine Dion, Christina Aguilera and Beyonce. So you have a choice of styles to go with if you love this song. It starts with, 'At last, my love has come along, my lonely days are over.' Simply beautiful.

The Stylistics - Betcha By Golly Wow
This song has been covered many times over the years, most notably by Prince, Dionne Warwick and Phyllis Hyman. The words are sweet and romantic. 'Never thought that fairy tales came true, But they come true when I'm near you', and 'If I could, I'd catch a falling star, To shine on you so I know where you are' stays in the mind.

Chaka Khan - Sweet Thing
Singer Chaka Khan co-wrote this song about her then husband with her Rufus bandmate Tony Maiden. In fact, in this song, Chaka Khan implores this man to be her sweet thing.

The Carpenters - We've Only Just Begun
A few songs by The Carpenters could have been included in this list. I'm sure I'll include another one for next year. According to wikipedia, it's a popular wedding song, most likely because the words are so fitting. The song signifies the start of a journey with your loved one, hence, it opens with, 'We've only just begun to live'.

Shania Twain - From This Moment On
Another Wikipedia fact: From This Moment On was written as a love song between Shania Twain and Robert Lange. "Can't wait to live my life with you, can't wait to start," has to be one of the most memorable lyrics from this song.

Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You
If you've never seen the movie, The Bodyguard, I'm sure you've the heard its penultimate song, 'I Will Always Love You' by Whitney Houston. It's not the original version, but a brilliant version nonetheless, most famous for its a cappella beginning, where there's nothing but her voice before the rest of the music starts.

Jason Mraz - I'm Yours
Last but not least is Jason Mraz' I'm Yours. With a laid back rhythm, almost reggae in nature, Jason Mraz sings to a special someone. You can imagine being on a beach, or in a garden, or even the middle of wondrous nature. His lyrics, 'I wont hesitate no more,' encapsulates his love and desire to be complete with somebody.

I hope you enjoyed the Top 10 First Dance Wedding Songs of 2011 as chosen by the Editor of Carol Black Music, Wedding Music UK.

Best Acoustic Songs - Between Personal Preference and Playing Skill

There are some classic acoustic songs that can be judged as best, because they are not only perfectly performed but because they are also untouched and truly classic tunes.

There are plenty of the best acoustic songs to add to your play list. Acoustic music has made a real comeback in recent years and has had a huge impact on the younger generation. These classics have been rediscovered by the younger generation and are enjoying a new rebirth as popular music.

Determining the Best

Determining the best acoustic songs can be done by setting up certain criteria. Longevity is a good place to start if a tune has been covered over and over again it can probably be added to the best list.

Many of the older rock and rollers really put out some great tunes that would easily make the best of list. Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, many of the artists from the nineteen sixties produced acoustic music that would easily make the best list not only because the tunes have longevity and not only because they are covered so often but because the raw talent of the artist shines through in the simplest way.

To make the best list the tune would have to be something that is cross generational and is easy to listen to. You can find a host of good examples of potential best of contenders all over the internet.

Many critics would have to agree that the nineteen sixties and seventies produced some of the best acoustic songs that have ever been made. This the era of folk music and free love produced music that was saturated with emotion and not mechanical music. There were no synthesizers nor were there many electric guitars being played everything was played in the old fashioned way.

Internet Music

The internet has changed the way that we do so many things. Listening to music is one of those things that has changed thanks to the internet. We are exposed to so many different types of music that we would never have been exposed to in the past. Finding the best acoustic songs on the internet is a simple web search away.

The internet is the perfect forum to discover not only acoustic music but many other genres as well that may very well never have been played on the radio. You can listen to the best acoustic songs right from your own laptop while surfing around.
