Top 4 Clothing Styles

There are so many different types of brands out there these days and this is very true when it comes to clothing brands. This is probably down to the number of new clothing styles that have evolved in recent years. The emergence of extreme sports and new music genres has contributed to this as art has collided head on with fashion.

Here are my top four clothing brand styles.

Surf Wear

Surf wear is a phrase that was coined to categorise the clothing of surfers. This initially began with surfers from the Southern California scene who began creating their own clothing brands. This was a result of the rise in popularity of surfing and its recognition as a sport which meant surfers could get sponsorship deals with surfboard and wet suit manufacturers. Examples of famous surf wear brands include Volcom, Quiksilver and Billabong.

Skate Wear

Skate wear was used to describe clothing brands that came out of the skate scene. Skate wear has close links with surf wear as both styles emerged out of the same scene as skateboarders and surfers tend to be one and the same. This is no surprise as originally skateboards were designed by surfers to practise surfing on land. The two clothing styles are fairly similar but each individually caters for the needs of skateboarders or surfers. Recognised skate wear brands include Vans shoes, Etnies and Element.

Urban Wear

Urban Wear came about thanks to the influence of the hip hop and rap lifestyle. During the late 70's and early 80's hip hop and rap music started to emerge with artists like Run DMC and the Beastie Boys breaking into the mainstream. These artists were known for wearing baggy clothes, gold chains and Adidas shoes with the laces out. These styles developed over time and with the rise in popularity of hip hop many artists started their own clothing labels. Those that had been inspired by these music styles also started creating clothing brands influenced by their favourite artists. This resulted in many urban wear brands like Roca Wear, Phat Farm and Sean John.

Street Wear

Street Wear is a clothing style that draws influence from all the previous clothing styles. Street wear is probably best described as clothing that is inspired by urban living in metropolitan towns and cities. Hence street wear draws influence from all aspects of life in that environment including graffiti, street art, skateboarding, bmx, surfing as well as music from rock to hip hop. Street wear clothing designs often feature bright graphics and graffiti designs as well as a touch of camouflage here and there. The Addict Clothing Co, Stussy and Obey Giant are prime examples of innovative streetwear brands.

Fabolous - Akademiks Hip-Hop Clothing

Akademiks hip-hop clothing exploded onto the fashion stage when Brooklyn rapper Fabolous wore it and rapped about it back in 2001. Since then, the brand has taken the urban clothing world by storm.

With its motto, "Denim Is King," Akademiks has set out to be an innovator, creator and driving force in urban clothing. Coveted for their detail and quality, Akademiks PRPS jeans are worn by rappers like Dizzee Rascal and 50 Cent. Titled "Jeanius Level," Akademiks jeans are created using design techniques such as hand brushing, over-dyed tinting, potassium sponging and triple-dip indigo treatments.

The man behind Akademiks is Donwan Harrell. He started out designing for Joseph Abboud, Donna Karan and Nike. With that background, he went into business with his wife Jahayra and his brother Emmett and now has developed lines of products for men, women and children, along with accessories, outerwear and footwear.

Building on the hip-hop tradition, Akademiks urban clothing delivers the kind of style that has long been a part of hip-hop culture. Growing out of the African-American youth experience in cities like Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Detroit, Chicago, Miami, Atlanta and the San Francisco Bay area, hip-hop culture had its beginnings in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Today, hip-hop influences are felt around the country and the world. It would be difficult to find an ethnic group that isn't represented.

At the same time hip-hop music made the scene, so did hip-hop clothing. Twenty short years later, hip-hop artists like Sean Diddy Combs, Russell Simmons and Wu-Tang Clan had their own urban clothing lines. They recognized the lasting influence of the hip-hop culture and must have known it would touch the imagination of generations of youth.

Like every creative endeavor, developing hip-hop clothing lines has been a process of change, retrenchment, progress and even a few errors. But that's the nature of creative work. Still, urban clothing has a solid foundation. It makes a statement that won't go away: Urban life is full of pain and joy, poetry and vulgarity, challenges and triumphs and, most of all, energy.

Fads come and go. Trends can reverse themselves. But hip-hop just keeps going. Urban culture is here to stay in all its edgy glory. It has become its own tradition, but it hasn't become locked into traditional ways. It's always changing, always growing, and always challenging people to rethink their ideas and prejudices. Like hip-hop itself, Akademiks hip-hop clothing puts the world on notice. It demands and gives creativity and a bold statement about the world.

Hip Hop Clothing

In recent years the fashion trend of hip-hop clothing is of an underground street culture into the mainstream fashion world has become. Urban clothes are now proudly shown at the top fashion shows in Milan, Italy, Paris and New York. Just years so blatantly obvious and urban clothing ten would have never seen the light of day on these shows, but now they are proudly displayed. So what is this trend and consumers are the driving force of growth in the fashionNiche?

The answer can be found in the view of the history of hip-hop itself and it's evolution into the mainstream of music and fashion culture. Hip hop went from being the music of a few skateboarders and lyricists to corner the predominant musical culture of today's young generation. As more people listen to hip hop and urban music, the fashion styles and dress of these young people were starting to reflect the music and artists they hear. While mostdo not remember now, the first trend have been adopted from the urban music of Adidas shoes, which were originally made popular by the hip hop legends Run DMC. After that came the bling bling jewelry and the baggy pants, hats, and was followed backwards through the major chains.

The trend line was further moved forward when the famous rapper LL Cool J signed on to promote the FUBU clothing. FUBU stood for "for us by us" and the first urban clothing line was to hit the mainstream around theWorld. After FUBU came Phat Farm, which was launched a trendy line of Def Jam president Russell Simmons to life - a hip-hop mogul himself. This line was incredibly successful and enjoyed the support and patronage of several high profile rappers. After these lines gained steam and saw success, many rappers started catching up with the idea that they could start their own lines of gear and started to do this. Jay-Z came with Rocawear, a tremendously successful line, which he eventually sold for more than onehundred million dollars. Other rappers followed, although not all were so successful. 50 Cent's G Unit Clothing Line introduced to much applause, and even with Reebok on a top selling shoe line as a partner.

Over the years, many smaller urban clothing lines have developed unique and jumping up. Meanwhile, there are literally hundreds of lines of hip-hop clothes as in the latest Magic Fashion Show in Las Vegas shows. There are many artistic currents, such as T-shirtsHand painted pictures and drawings, lines by and for women, hats and even hip hop jewelry, bling bling the styles of hip-hop artists taken mimics.

Overall, the hip-hop styles have evolved since the introduction of the first urban gear brand. They are today as a way into the mainstream of the clothing and fashion and are also breaking new ground with creativity and design. Hip hop clothing is here to stay and now has a foothold in the fashion industry as a whole requires.

Wholesale Urban Clothing The Newest Trend

Urban wear has now been with us for a number of years. It is an outgrowth of the hip-hop culture, and by extension, of the "extreme" sports universe. If you are a fan of hip-hop or are into extreme sports, then you know exactly what is is meant by urban wear.

Urban wear is bold, fresh and expressive of the hunger and in-your-face fearlessness of the hip hop generation. Urban clothing is distinguished by trendy looks, controversial designs and an up-to-the-minute look.

Urban Wear Goes Designer

From the very beginning designers of urban wear have been concerned with creating "designer" fashions. Just looking "urban" is not enough. New designs must be aggressive, flamboyant and in your face. Of course urban clothing must always look youthful, but at the same time most urban clothing designs have been serious in their own way and always conscious of projecting an "I got my issues" image.

More recent trends in urban clothing have been a bit more lighthearted with an acknowledgment that it is all a bit of a put on. As designs have migrated from the rapper-inspired and often rapper-owned design shops to more mainstream labels this is an inevitable transformation. It is difficult and disingenuous for mainstream labels to make out as though they are disadvantaged and unhappy with the status quo. They are the status quo.

Brands such as Akademiks, Rocawear and Ecko are identified with the urban clothing trend and are known for designs inspired by the street culture that gave rise to both rap and urban clothing designs. In fact many of these labels were founded by rappers themselves, in an attempt to cash in while translating their image and notoriety into their clothing designs.

Meanwhile newer companies such as Vokal have expanded the urban clothing label to include high end velour, fleece loungewear, denim, and vividly colored athletic jerseys. Another company, Baby Phat aims at creating a blend of hip hop style with more sophisticated metropolitan fashion to create a refined urban look.

This is nothing new. Co-opting fringe trends is what the fashion industry does best. It is simply trying to cash in on the way different groups of consumers follow different trends. And it only makes sense to go after people with the time and money to pay high prices to make a suitable impression.

Wholesale Urban Clothing

On the other hand, the fact that the urban clothing market is changing rapidly has resulted in the development of a significant market for wholesale urban clothing. Since urban wear designs turn over quickly and manufacturers have to stay ahead of the curve, they are quite prepared to move large volumes of last month's designs for cut rate prices.

As a result enterprising clothing merchants can buy up sizable lots of over stocked items and sell them in large quantities - often on the internet. These items go for much lower prices than you can find in most retail urban wear specialty stores.

For consumers interested in buying five or six items at one time this is ideal. It makes it possible for someone interested in changing fashion trends to replace their entire wardrobe for much less than it might otherwise cost.
